Actress and podcaster Christy Carlson Romano went through a harrowing incident earlier this year. In February, while celebrating her husband’s birthday at a clay pigeon shooting facility, she was accidentally shot in the eye by someone from another group. After being rushed to the hospital, she has largely recovered since then. Now that some time has elapsed, the former child star appears ready to talk about the incident, and she didn’t shy away from describing the gruesome details of her severe-sounding injury when she did so.
Known for voicing the eponymous character on the beloved Kim Possible (one of the greatest animated series), Christy Carlson Romano posted about her injury after it happened. She took to Instagram to share a video of her bruised and bloodied eye. Romano got candid about the situation during her appearance on an episode of the Not a Damn Chance! Podcast. When asked exactly how it happened, the actress said she was not “at liberty to say specifics” but she described the moment it happened:
In an unexpected turn of events, I found myself in the line of fire, not from any hostile intentions, but merely due to a quick, intense burst of birdshot coming my way. It happened within a mere 200 feet or so, leaving me stunned and in a state of disbelief. My initial thoughts? A strange mix of excitement (I’d just been shot!) and fear (oh no, am I going to be okay?). My husband, who was there, asked if I was hurt because, surprisingly, I didn’t react or make a sound. I guess I was just… detached from the situation, it felt so surreal. It’s an experience I’ll never forget – wild indeed!
From her remarks, it seems the ex-star of Even Stevens appeared shocked immediately after being struck. In an upcoming podcast episode (as reported by People), she detailed that her spouse, Brendan Rooney, swiftly stepped in to manage the situation. Although he handled it deftly, they both remained worried about the initial incident and any potential future occurrences.
In a similar manner, he responded with “You’re skilled,” and I retorted, “I’m hurt.” He exclaimed, “Oh dear,” and rushed towards me to check if I was alright. Despite his instinct to retaliate against the perpetrator, he had been practicing stoicism. This situation immediately triggered his action mode, as he assessed my condition and hurried to fetch the car. An overwhelming sensation washed over me, unlike anything I’d experienced before, leaving me feeling faint. I believe it was shock. I could feel blood trickling from my forehead…and in that moment, I uttered three things. I asked if I was going to die, who would look after my daughters, and if my career was ruined.
This seems like a truly terrifying ordeal, and I can’t fathom how one would cope after being shot in the eye. To be frank, what would really scare me is finding myself in Brendan Rooney’s position, having to confront someone close to me going through such an emergency. Christy Carlson Romano is undoubtedly lucky to be safe now, and as she pointed out, the situation could have been even more dire if not for some crucial factors intervening: a fitting way of expressing your thoughts in simpler, more conversational language.
If I had turned my head slightly, I could have sustained an injury that might have led to blindness in my right eye or even potentially fatal damage to my skull. Remarkably, there are still fragments lodged in my forehead and behind my eye, only a millimeter away from causing blindness.

How former Disney stars Christy Carlson Romano (Even Stevens) and Will Friedle (Boy Meets World) might react to animated remakes of their respective shows.
Christy Carlson Romano has managed to bring humor into her circumstances, even while in the hospital, as she shared. I’m relieved that she’s able to carry on and discuss these experiences, and I think many others would agree with me. Romano is well-known for her long-standing career with Disney Channel (her timeless shows and movies can be watched on Disney+). In recent times, she’s also been candid about a range of topics, from her vocal role models to the themes in her book “Quiet on Set“.
Experiencing a potentially perilous situation can provide someone with a new outlook, and it appears this has occurred with Romano. She is fully aware that she is now a “survivor of a gunshot wound,” and I hope only the best for her health in the future.
