Mostly, my time spent on Elden Ring Nightreign has been about frantically trying to construct a decent character setup with the subpar resources provided by the game—I’m just not fortunate when it comes to roguelikes, as you can see. If I require a four in Balatro, I never get one. However, last night, bursting with joy as my initial sword infected my enemies with nearly every possible illness, I managed to outsmart the game of chance: It turns out that the only successful strategy was not to participate at all.
In Elden Ring, Nightreign’s unique feature revolves around the unpredictability of loot acquisition. While your passive abilities are crucial for survival, acquiring a strong primary weapon is indispensable. Interestingly, players in the community have discovered a build that bypasses this entire randomized gear system.
After observing YouTuber and live-streamer Youwy achieve a level one victory singlehandedly, I felt compelled to experiment with this solo Executor build myself. Notably, you must defeat two Nightlords to unlock it, but when you gain entry, the configuration will essentially solve itself.
- The Night of Miasma relic from Fissure in the Fog (Caligo, Miasma of Night)
- The Night of the Wise relic from Sentient Pest (Gnoster, Wisdom of Night)
- That’s literally it.
For the third relic slot on the Executor, feel free to equip any item that suits it well. Currently, I’m experiencing good results with the “Partial restoration upon Post-Damage Attacks” and “Stamina recovers with each successful attack” modifiers, but essentially, any modification will do.
These two artifacts empower your Executor’s Blade, causing it to not only inflict bleeding but also accumulate both poison and frostbite. The poison originates from the “poisonous starting ammunition” of the Night of the Wise relic, while the frostbite stems from the Chilling Mist ability of the Night of the Miasma relic, temporarily infusing your weapon with frostbite for a certain period.
In addition, these artifacts enhance attack power when attacking a frostbitten foe or near poison and scarlet rot. Furthermore, since you are an Executor, you will frequently trigger all your status effects due to your high Arcane S scaling.
Harvey, one might argue that your initial weapon may not measure up to the ones available on the Executor. While it’s true that there are powerful legendary weapons out there, remember that you might not have access to them at the start. Instead, this build provides you with a solid A-tier weapon right from the beginning, rather than waiting for the elusive S-tier legendary armaments. Even though C students don’t get the best grades, As are still quite impressive.
As a gamer, I find it super convenient that I can enhance my initial weapon using smithing stones, and they’re easy to obtain! Just pop into a mine at least once during a gaming session for a Smithing Stone 2, drop by a merchant for a Smithing Stone 1, and voila! I’m all set.
The significant advantage in this scenario lies with tempo – a term I’m borrowing from card games, but it applies perfectly here. Tempo signifies the speed at which a game unfolds. In essence, discovering a good weapon early is more impactful than finding one late because an early-acquired Best-in-Slot (BIS) gear will allow you to collect more resources, defeat more opponents, and benefit from more favorable rolls on potent passive abilities.
Last night, I found that tearing through some Nightlords was similar to using a powerful “aggressive” deck in Magic: The Gathering. Just like this Executor loadout, it starts out incredibly strong compared to early-game options and maintains its advantage by staying one step ahead of the competition.
The modularity is quite impressive, as demonstrated by the variety of equipment options. For instance, during gameplay, I obtained a tree sentinel shield that boosted guard counters and triggered a holy aura upon landing an attack. In another game, I combined another high-quality Katana with additional bleed and frostbite effects in my offhand, resulting in devastating outcomes.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all if FromSoftware fixes this issue, and there are definitely Nightlords that this powerful-katana won’t affect. However, for now, I’m going to have a fantastic time using even the most basic katana, watching as it inflicts three different status effects on my foes, tearing them apart.
