„I Think My Involvement, My Input Will Contribute.” Tite Kubo Explains His Involvement in Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War Anime Production Process

As a long-time Bleach fan who can recall the days of Ichigo Kurosaki’s thrilling adventures against Hollows, I am beyond excited that the Thousand-Year Blood War arc is finally being animated! With the series now in its third season and more to come, it feels like we’ve been transported back to our childhood, albeit with a fresh, modern animation style that’s even better than before.

The popular manga titled “Bleach” is undoubtedly recognized by the fan base of the “Big Three” (Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece). For many, it was a part of our childhood as we followed Ichigo and his companions battling Hollows and other adversaries. In 2022, the final story arc of the manga was transformed into an anime titled Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War. Currently, the series is in its third season, with another season left to be released.

What Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is about

Note: The following contains small plot details from the Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War manga and anime, so beware if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War represents the concluding chapter of the series, revolving around the monumental struggle between the Soul Society and the Quincy, a formidable force that comes dangerously close to obliterating the Soul Society. The Shinigami find themselves in a precarious situation, resulting in fierce combat encounters brimming with character enhancements and novel Bankai manifestations.

The animated series you can find on Disney Plus is derived from the manga written by Tite Kubo. Originally airing on TV Tokyo back in October 2004, this show, known as Bleach, has recently come back with a revitalized, contemporary animation style that fans have admired for its visually appealing upgrade, after almost 18 years.

During an interview with VIZ, the creator of Bleach revealed some interesting details about the adaptation process. He acknowledged that during adaptations, content is sometimes trimmed or, on occasion, supplemented. In this interview, Kubo highlighted particular scenes and moments he desires to see incorporated into the anime, aiming to make it more captivating for fans and expanding the story beyond what was presented in the original manga.

In my mental planning, I intended to conclude the manga after fifteen years had passed, given the abundance of characters featured in the final storyline, numerous battle sequences didn’t make it onto the pages. My aspiration is to reintegrate those missing scenes wherever feasible.

I must say, it’s truly exciting to witness the creative mind behind a beloved franchise still hard at work, refining and updating the masterpiece! With shonen anime, there’s always an insatiable appetite for intense, well-executed battles against formidable adversaries. Here’s a snippet from the interview below.

During the course of the conversation, Kubo was queried about his role in the creation of the animation. In response, the manga artist shared:

Although I usually prefer not to interfere with other adaptations as it might seem like taking jobs away from others, for this specific project, I believe my contribution can enhance the experience for the fans. Therefore, I’m eager to assist in every stage of its development.

Kubo’s hands-on method isn’t frequently found, but it should be more prevalent. Not many manga creators have such a significant impact on their work’s anime adaptations. So, it’s refreshing to learn that some veterans in the field still play an active role in animation matters, especially those of great importance.

As a reminder, the third season of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is currently airing, and fans are excited to see how the battles will unfold on screen. With Tite Kubo’s involvement, we can be confident that the upcoming episodes will deliver some great entertainment in the weeks ahead.
