„I Still Don’t Like That Movie.” Steven Spielberg Wasn’t Convinced by The Script of The Film with Robin Williams, Which Earned $300 Million

As a huge fan of Steven Spielberg‘s work, I have to admit that there are films of his that don’t resonate with me as much as others. One such production is “Hook,” which he made in 1991 and starred Robin Williams as Peter Pan.

Nearly every artist has pieces in their body of work that they feel more or less fond of, and Steven Spielberg is no different. He has films that he isn’t proud of and would have approached differently if given the chance. One such project for him is Hook, featuring Robin Williams.

In the revised Peter Pan tale where the protagonist, now grown, went back to Neverland to confront Captain Hook, the outcome didn’t meet the filmmaker’s expectations. The 1991 film “Hook” was a financial success, raking in $301 million at the box office against a production budget of $70 million. Despite this achievement, it was panned by critics. Fewer than one-third of the reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes were positive. However, the audience reception was more favorable.

In an interview on Kermode & Mayo Film Review in 2012, Spielberg admitted that he has criticisms of his own films, but remains hopeful that he may grow to appreciate them as much as the audience does at some point.

I’d be happy to give that film “Hook” another chance. Despite my current dislike for it, I hold out hope that I may come to appreciate certain aspects upon rewatching.

Six years have passed since I brought my project to life, but I’m still not completely sold on it. In an interview with Empire magazine, I admitted that I had my doubts while filming. The script wasn’t solid in my eyes, and I was unsure of my capabilities as a director.

As a gamer, I found myself utterly out of my element while working on Hook. The script didn’t resonate with me, leaving me uncertain and second-guessing myself. However, I was confident in the opening act and the epilogue. It was the meat of the story that left me perplexed, unsure of how to bring it to life. In an attempt to mask my insecurities, I focused on enhancing the production value – the more unsure I became, the grander and more vibrant the sets grew.

Despite the success and positive response from audiences, Spielberg continues to be hesitant about directing “Hook.”
