At the age of six, Brokeback Mountain was initially released, a movie that has garnered much acclaim as one of the top films from the 2000s throughout my life. Along with the praise, I’ve also heard many discussions about its tragic nature without fully understanding why. It wasn’t until I watched Brokeback Mountain for the first time during its limited re-release to celebrate its 20th anniversary that I began to comprehend the reasons behind this sentiment and accurately anticipated its heartbreaking conclusion.
Unexpectedly, the ending had an aspect that left me devastated, even though my intuition about it proved accurate.
I Had A Feeling Jake Gyllenhaal’s Character Was Going To Die From The Start
In this timeless western movie, Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Jack stands out for his impulsive nature among the two main roles. His past in rodeo and his bond with his horse on Brokeback Mountain serve as indicators of this trait. Remarkably, these elements echo a tragic, hasty incident that eventually results in Jack’s demise.
From the start, it became clear that Jack wouldn’t make it through the film. Despite the societal constraints, Jack lives boldly and unfettered. It’s Jack who persistently encourages Ennis to escape together, and he’s the one prepared to take the chance to live openly with his affection.
In the movie, Jack’s spouse communicates to Heath Ledger’s character, Ennis, that he perished when a tire on his vehicle detonated. Yet, Ennis additionally visualizes his lover being brutally attacked, thus leaving the exact cause of his death somewhat unclear. This ambiguity, however, seems to underscore the dangerous nature of their lives and love.
As a movie buff, I couldn’t help but sense that Jack was the character destined to meet an untimely end. This was largely due to his readiness and eagerness to openly express his love for Ennis – a stark contrast to Ennis’ guarded and overly protective nature. Moreover, Jack’s emotional vulnerability, evident in his outspokenness and occasional reckless actions, further solidified my hunch about his fate.
Reflecting on the situation, I concluded that such a build-up of tension and eventual conclusion was inevitable for these two individuals. Yet, what surprised me was discovering that this climax occurred long after their initial mountain expedition.

However, I Had No Clue How Much Time This Movie Spanned. So, When Jack Died All Those Years Later, It Shocked Me
Initially, I thought the storyline of Brokeback Mountain would be confined to their initial encounter at the mountain. However, I was taken aback to find out that the plot extends beyond just that single trip, encompassing over a decade of their lives.

In a more casual tone, I recently revisited the movie “Brokeback Mountain” and it’s left me feeling just as frustrated as I was years ago that it didn’t win the Best Picture award. Let me explain why this film deserves top honors.
Instead of featuring a swift and passionate love tale, this film unfolds at a measured pace with occasional bursts of intensity, much like smoldering embers that flicker intermittently. The story doesn’t blaze fiercely and quickly; instead, it simmers slowly as these two characters grapple with their emotions and societal pressures.
Each instance when Jack suggests fleeing together leaves my heart aching more deeply. With every goodbye following their journeys, the emotions intensify. And ultimately, as Jack meets his end, witnessing an aging Ennis cope with his loss is unbearably heartrending.
For more than a decade, Ennis grapples with life, love, and refuses to make the jump towards being with the man who means the world to him. His suppressed feelings hold him back from what he truly desires, and eventually, after numerous years, the chance to act on those emotions is irrevocably lost to him for good.
If the story spanned just a short while, Jack’s death would undoubtedly be sad. But since it unfolded over many years, these men shared significant parts of their lives, and their relationship was deeply intertwined with their existence for such a long time. Therefore, the abrupt ending, before they could fully realize its potential, feels like an unexpected heartbreak.

Seeing Ennis In Jack’s Home And How He Reacted To His Old Jacket Is What Wrecked Me
Later on, what truly brings a tear to my eye is when Ennis discovers about Jack’s demise. Subsequently, he journeys to the residence of Jack’s parents, and within that home, he encounters his old jacket from their trip on Brokeback Mountain, stained with blood.
In this scene, Ledger’s performance is striking in its silence. He effectively conveys the deep sorrow he harbors over the loss, as he retrieves the jacket from the wardrobe and clings to it. It seems as though he’s been swept back to that tragic journey while also grieving for all they’ve lost in the here and now.
Following that event, there’s a brief moment where we can anticipate the future, as Ennis discovers his daughter is getting married. Upon visiting his home, it’s evident how isolated he feels; yet, it’s heartwarming to witness him joyful about his child’s new love, even though it’s challenging not to ponder on what might have been between him and Jack during that moment. Notably, they were roughly the same age when they initially crossed paths as depicted in this scene with his daughter.

Later, I can’t help but add another layer of sorrow to this story, as the closing scene depicts Ennis reaching for his daughter’s sweater, left behind. Upon opening the closet door, there, prominently displayed, were Jack’s old shirt and jacket – a poignant reminder of the mountain where they shared their love.
Observing him mend those torn buttons while wiping away tears, and carefully rearranging the picture, transported me back to the beginning of their romance, causing me to reflect on all the possibilities that might have occurred, yet unfortunately did not materialize.
As a cinephile, I must express my deep admiration for this film that, in my opinion, deserved the Best Picture award. It’s a poignant tragedy that showcases two outstanding performances by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, who embody their roles as these ill-fated lovers with such raw emotion and beauty that it leaves one heartbroken.
Despite my initial expectations, the film offered many unexpected layers that added to its emotional depth, making each scene even more impactful. Consequently, I found myself deeply moved, experiencing a profound sense of empathy for these characters and their tragic love story.
