Initially, there were just whispers about it, but later on, it seemed almost certain due to a leak: It appears that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is set for a remaster.
I just hope they didn’t remaster all the ugly out of its mugs.
Some individuals online may try to persuade you that all RPG games prior to 2020 were populated with attractive characters, but this is not accurate. In fact, the game “Oblivion” has become well-known for its rather unattractive NPCs, as demonstrated by a past attempt to find the ugliest faces in Oblivion by Chris.
The initial group of characters Chris met appeared quite ordinary in appearance. They weren’t exactly lifelike, possessing a certain resemblance to Mr. Potato Head toys, but if you choose to overlook minor inconsistencies, they seemed normal, given that they all shared a striking similarity in their looks.
Later on, Chris encountered an individual known as Jorck the Outcast, who is clearly visible in the picture provided, and it is quite possible that he would excel at the World Gurning Championships. Chris compared his elongated facial texture to a piece of “stretched, chewy salt-water taffy.
I’m fond of Jorck and the quirky characters in Oblivion, and I appreciate that even its more attractive NPCs maintain a normal appearance. A mix of types can be seen in the gallery I’ve compiled. I find myself a bit unusual too, and when I step out of my apartment and encounter other people with unique features, it reassures me: I haven’t stumbled into a realm like The Twilight Zone where everyone is stunning except for me. It’s only some individuals who are attractive, as it naturally should be.
While some may argue that a fantasy RPG doesn’t necessitate the representation of all real-world chin types and eyeball ratios, it’s equally unnecessary for it to feature hyper-idealized characters like ‘bombshells’. Ultimately, the type of fantasy you prefer is subjective.
In the realm of Oblivion, I embarked on an extraordinary adventure, temporarily forgetting my mission to seek out unconventional characters. One day, I found myself infiltrating the abode of a peculiar fellow named Salomon Geonette, who bore an eerie gaze reminiscent of glass. While he slumbered peacefully, clad in his night attire, I discretely rifled through his pockets. Afterwards, I waited outside his house for 13 days, intrigued to see how the situation would unfold. Alas, during his absence, a mysterious figure known as Wolf, it seemed, ended Salomon’s tale.
In my opinion, I can’t quite grasp the type of fantasy this portrays, but if I may say so, it seems to be more fitting for a world without an overabundance of attractive individuals.
In the leaked screenshots of the Oblivion remaster, there are no close-ups of Non-Player Character (NPC) faces revealed yet, but hints regarding the potential direction the developers might have taken can be found. This is because a character previously seen in Oblivion also makes an appearance in Starfield.
Here’s the Adoring Fan in Oblivion and in Starfield:
Although the characters in the Starfield version and the one on the left aren’t elves, they share many common traits. However, no matter how hard I try to perceive the character on the right as a more “realistic” interpretation of the character on the left rather than a “sexier” or more seductive version, it remains challenging for me to do so.
The resemblance is completely gone. The round shape of his face, the low brow, and the unique texture between his upper eyelids and arched eyebrows that appears to have been poorly done during a facelift… without those distinctive features, the man on the right bears an uncanny resemblance to an actor who people try to deny is attractive but secretly admire. He might play the role of a British gangster and flirt playfully with Amelia Dimoldenberg in a chicken shop.
It might be challenging to update traditional characters without adding a more attractive feel to them. Let’s see if it’s validated by the truth: If the chatter is correct, the Oblivion remake is almost here.
