As a movie lover with a soft spot for romantic tales of human connection, I was utterly disappointed by the lackluster ending of “Twisters.” Having grown up watching the original “Twister” (1996) where Bill and Jo shared an unforgettable kiss amidst the chaos of a tornado, my expectations were high for this sequel. But alas, what I got was a disappointing anti-climax.
Kate heads back to New York City; Javi continues his humanitarian work; and Tyler returns to gathering clicks and views online. As expected, Javi drops off Kate at the airport, but despite his unspoken feelings for her, they’ve agreed to be friends only. However, just as Kate is about to board her plane, Tyler suddenly appears, causing a scene with an argumentative airport attendant (Paul Scheer). It seems familiar: people run after each other in airports and then share a kiss, doesn’t it?
I can’t believe it! After all the anticipation, after the intense storms we weathered together, and those heartwarming moments at Maura Tierney’s house during barbecues, there’s no romantic kiss in “Twisters”. Why deny us this satisfying payoff? It seems unfair when movies with artificial characters in costumes lack passion, while a film featuring real people with palpable sexual tension leaves us hanging. Tyler even walks through the rain wearing a white T-shirt, building the tension – only for nothing to happen in the end. What’s going on here?
As a movie critic with a deep appreciation for films that push the boundaries of romance and drama, I’ve seen my fair share of on-screen kisses that left me underwhelmed or disappointed. But when it comes to the smooch between Bill Paxton’s Bill and Helen Hunt’s Jo in “Twisters,” I can’t help but be moved by its poignant significance.
The ending of Twisters leaves many viewers feeling disappointed because, despite Kate overcoming her past and Javi being softened up, and their clear mutual attraction, they don’t share a kiss in the end. Instead, they continue to focus on the tornado research. It seems unbelievable that after all the screen time dedicated to their lingering glances and shared moments, such as Tyler bringing Kate pizza, they don’t seal their newfound connection with a romantic gesture. If Twisters chooses not to address climate change in its narrative, that’s their decision. But denying the audience a satisfying romantic payoff is an unnecessary missed opportunity.
