„I Hated Him.” Star Wars Director Brought Carrie Fisher to Tears. It Took Her An Hour to Return to The Set

As a longtime Star Wars fan and avid gamer with a deep appreciation for film history, I can’t help but be intrigued by Carrie Fisher‘s experiences while working on the original trilogy. Having grown up watching Princess Leia’s iconic performances, it’s disheartening to hear about her challenging relationship with director Richard Marquand during the production of Return of the Jedi.

Carrie Fisher cherished her part as Princess Leia and fondly recalls her time during the production of the first two movies in the original Star Wars saga. However, she doesn’t have such warm feelings when reflecting on the process of making the third film, Return of the Jedi.

On the set of the Star Wars movie, there were some tensions between the actress and director Richard Marquand. According to Fisher’s account in an interview with The Daily Beast, he frequently shouted at her.

As a die-hard fan, I can share that she claimed his behavior wasn’t consistently harsh towards all actors; instead, it was Carrie Fisher who often faced his criticism on set. In fact, there was one instance where he made her cry so much that filming had to halt for an entire hour.

As a gamer, I couldn’t stand him. He would relentlessly harass Harrison and me, but his cruel words always seemed to sting the most. One particularly frustrating day, he shouted at me, and the tears flowed freely. The salty tears brought a strange sense of satisfaction as I thought, “Is this what it feels like to disrupt your perfect game plan? Now you know how I feel.” It took an hour for them to meticulously apply my makeup once again.

Carrie Fisher found it a minor victory that she made Richard Marquand cry during filming, as this delay gave him insight into how his actions impacted production. Yet, she didn’t enjoy working with him. Fortunately, her negative experience didn’t diminish her love for the series where she starred and eventually returned to many years later.
