It often occurs that actors commit to work on projects that, upon further examination of the script, turn out to be mismatched with their talents or preferences. In such cases, after carefully reading through the script, they may come to regret their decision to participate in a specific production, but by then it’s usually too late to withdraw and they are bound by contract to appear in the film or TV show against their will.
Channing Tatum, the actor, had a challenging time with the movie “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”. Despite his dislike for it, he turned down the role as many as seven times. However, circumstances compelled him to accept the part eventually, as he revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair.
Initially, I declined the offer seven times, but my choice was overruled, leaving me no other option than to participate in the film. Consequently, it’s clear that I wasn’t keen on taking part in the second opportunity as well.
In the series, Tatum was hesitant about participating. When it came to filming the second part, released in 2013 (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), he requested his character’s demise in the opening 10 minutes of the movie, and his wish was granted.
In the interview with Howard Stern, Tatum opened up about his association with the well-known action series, revealing that his involvement in G.I. Joe, a role he had initially accepted, clashed with his career priorities at the time as he was concentrating on pursuing his dream projects. However, unexpectedly, he found himself playing G.I. Joe.
frankly speaking, I must admit my disdain for that film, G.I. Joe. It wasn’t a project of my own choosing; rather, I was obligated to take it on. In the early stages of my career, I was contractually bound to star in three films as part of a deal from Coach Carter. At that time, as an up-and-coming actor, the prospect of a three-picture deal sounded incredible, and I eagerly agreed. However, with the passing of time, I received other job offers, honed my craft, and pursued more appealing roles. Eventually, the studio contacted me about another film, which they sent over, and it turned out to be G.I. Joe.
The actor openly admitted that he disliked the script from the start and considered it subpar, which was particularly disappointing for him as a fan of the series, since he didn’t want his involvement to tarnish the project’s reputation. Furthermore, he wasn’t impressed with the character part he was given.
As a long-time fan who grew up watching G.I. Joe every morning, I wasn’t keen on getting involved with a subpar script. Frankly, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to step into the role of a hero I’ve admired since childhood, especially if it meant being part of something less than stellar or questioning my own fit for the iconic character.
Fortunately for Tatum, his journey with G.I. Joe concluded after the second movie. Later on, the franchise carried on without him, a development that the actor himself acknowledged as something he had no regrets about.
