‘I Had To Defend Myself’: Jeremy Renner Explains Why He Turned Down Hawkeye Season 2, And I Completely Get Where He’s Coming From

It’s been quite some time since we last witnessed Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there’s no news yet on whether he’ll return to this role in upcoming films or TV series. This prolonged silence is largely due to Renner’s unfortunate snowplow accident at the beginning of 2023, which necessitated a lengthy recovery period. Interestingly, it’s been reported that he was approached for Hawkeye Season 2, but he declined for a very reasonable reason.

In an interview with High Performance, I shared that my decision not to reprise the role of the archer I’ve played since 2011’s Thor wasn’t due to a waning interest in Hawkeye. If I had accepted another season of Hawkeye, which premiered at the end of 2021, it would have meant a significant reduction in my compensation, as Jeremy Renner candidly expressed.

They proposed that I work on Season 2 and gave me a reduced payment. In response, I said something like, ‘Working on this second season will require twice as much effort for half the compensation, and it’ll take around eight months of my time. Considering all that, I’m being offered half of what I earned in the first season? Are you implying that because I was hit by a car, I’m only worth half of the ‘Jeremy’ from the first season?’

Absolutely, it’s clear why Jeremy Renner might find this situation challenging. To clarify, while it wasn’t explicitly mentioned that his salary would be reduced due to his accident, there hasn’t been an official explanation given either. Renner himself has emphasized that he doesn’t harbor any resentment towards Marvel Studios or even Disney as a whole, but rather the financial department at Disney, whom he referred to as “penny pinchers.

Renner further explained that he responded angrily to the accountants when he heard their “disrespectful proposal.” Although he’d be happy to reprise his role as Clint Barton in the future, he emphasized the importance of fair payment, and the figure suggested for Hawkeye Season 2 fell short. To put it simply, he said:

Unfortunately, I’m still fond of the character, and I’d continue to feel this way, but I needed to stand up for myself. I didn’t request any additional compensation, by the way. All I asked was to be compensated fairly for my work in the first season. It’s unfortunate that this didn’t occur, but I’m okay with it. I can let it go because my body is likely grateful that I’m not working on it at the moment. But we’ll have to wait and see.

More to come…
