I Felt Like I Did 12 Shots Of Espresso

Havoc signifies the much-anticipated comeback of director Gareth Evans into the realm of action-packed thrillers. He gained recognition in 2011 with The Raid: Redemption, a film that solidified him as a filmmaker known for his distinctive style and a knack for crafting raw, intense narratives. In Havoc, writer-director Evans spins the tale of a detective on a mission to locate the son of a corrupt politician following a disastrous drug deal.

As a supporter, I can’t help but express my excitement for being part of the audience drawn to “Havoc” by the captivating presence of Tom Hardy, who brilliantly portrays Detective Walker. Joining him in this star-studded cast are veterans like Timothy Olyphant, Forest Whitaker, Jessie Mei Li, and Luis Guzmán. It’s truly a treat to watch Guzmán on screen again, as his role as Raul continues his impressive career as one of America’s most versatile character actors. With over 150 projects under his belt, including iconic films such as “Boogie Nights,” “The Taking of Pelham 123,” and “Code Black,” Guzmán never fails to deliver a memorable performance.

In a chat with ScreenRant, Luis Guzmán discussed his involvement in Gareth Evans’ movie “Havoc.” He explained what drew him to the project and gave details about his character Raul. Additionally, Guzmán expressed excitement for season 2 of “Wednesday,” where he reprises his role as Gomez Addams, shared thoughts on Tom Hardy playing Bond, reminisced about collaborating with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson in the 2003 comedy “Anger Management.

Luis Guzmán Explains Raul’s Place In The World Of Havoc

“He Wasn’t A Bad, Bad Guy”

As a fervent admirer of both Gareth Evans and Tom Hardy, joining “Havoc” was a dream come true for me. Beyond our shared appreciation, I seized the chance to explore something fresh and unfamiliar at this scale – a challenge that piqued my interest. On a deeper level, I resonated with the character of Raul. As Guzmán, I found him relatable; “he’s this guy from the neighborhood,” as I put it. He was a hustler, but he also had a moral compass, knowing right from wrong, and caring for those around him.

In “Havoc”, Raul stands out among other characters due to his selfless actions, particularly towards his niece Mia. As Guzmán explained, “What really attracted me to Raul was that he wasn’t a villain in that world. Everyone had some sort of skeleton in their closet, but Raul was a man who held onto his own honor. He does everything within his power to shield this girl. He’s like a surrogate father to someone without proper parental guidance.

When it comes to collaborating with Tom Hardy on the initial encounter between Raul and Walker – a tense dialogue where they eventually reach an understanding, followed by Walker pointing a gun at Raul – Guzmán found the process incredibly authentic. “The whole thing just flowed quite naturally,” he explained, adding, “During filming that scene, it wasn’t about building up tension. It was more like a series of spontaneous moments, as if I was asking myself, ‘Who is this man?’

Guzmán went on to say: “The back-and-forth conversation felt incredibly real, something I truly value as it adds an unexpected twist when Tom suddenly pulls out a gun on me, making me exclaim, ‘Oh no, hang on, hang on.’ Then the police arrive and it’s like, ‘What in the world just happened?’ That’s how I portrayed it, but I was genuinely ecstatic to share that experience of working with Tom, and he did an excellent job.

Guzmán Weighs In On Tom Hardy’s Chances As James Bond

“Tom Hardy Can Do Anything He Wants To”

There’s been a significant online push for Tom Hardy to take over as James Bond after Daniel Craig stepped down. When asked about his co-star’s potential fit for the role, Guzmán expressed confidence by saying, “Tom Hardy has the ability to excel in any project he chooses.” He even pointed to Hardy’s work in the 2008 film ‘Bronson’ as an example of his versatility.

Guzmán recommends a movie that will leave you in awe – it’s ‘Bronson’. Once you watch this film along with a couple of others, and imagine Hardy as the next James Bond, you’ll appreciate why. Despite his numerous outstanding performances, Bronson is exceptional; you’ll exclaim, ‘I can’t believe I haven’t seen this before!’ It was Guzmán’s kids who introduced him to this Tom Hardy movie, saying, “Dad, you’ve got to watch this!” Guzmán describes Hardy as an intense and generous actor. He’s a fantastic performer, indeed. But what’s more, he’s a genuinely good person too.

Raul’s Gunfight Scene Is A Perfect Example Of The Movie’s Tone

“I [Felt Like] I Did Like 12 Shots Of Espresso”

Instead of relying on Walker to safeguard Mia, Raul takes action himself, leading to a shootout. When asked about portraying this intense scene, Guzmán said, “It felt like something innate. With all the chaos around you and this child by your side, it’s like, ‘Oh no, no, no.’ You just draw your weapon and do what needs to be done. It’s that old saying: ‘Only the strong survive.’ In that moment, I was transported back.

Guzmán went on, musing, “The film is centered around fluidity and quickness… The plot races along at such a pace. After seeing this movie for the first time, I swear by God, it felt like I consumed twelve shots of espresso. I was left wondering, ‘Wow, how do you slow down from this?’

Wednesday Season 2 Will Feature More Addams Family

Guzmán Will Return As Gomez Addams In A Season That Goes “Into A Different Galaxy”

On weekday (Wednesday), Netflix’s first season became a massive success, and while it primarily focused on its lead character rather than their parents, it uniquely portrayed the Addams Family through characters like Luis Guzmán as Gomez, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, and Fred Armisen as Fester. When questioned about a possible return of the Addams family in season 2, Guzmán confidently replied, “Absolutely, yes.

He continued to express his excitement for the entire season, saying, “I found the first season phenomenal, and I asked them, ‘How are you going to surpass this?’ They didn’t merely move to a higher level or another dimension–they soared to a different galaxy. Let me tell you, I take my hat off to these people because they envisioned something extraordinary, with Tim Burton involved, and it’s just mind-blowing! It all comes down to the writing, and they have an exceptionally talented ensemble of actors who make it all click perfectly. That’s all I’m going to say.

Guzmán Reflects On His 2003 Adam Sandler Comedy

“S***, I Got To Work With Jack Nicholson”

Fans of a particular era of Adam Sandler’s work might find themselves humming Jack Nicholson singing “I Feel Pretty” from West Side Story for life due to the 2003 film Anger Management. While it may not be everyone’s favorite Sandler movie, Anger Management boasts one of the strongest casts among his films, undeniably so. Alongside Sandler and Nicholson, the film also stars John Turturro, Woody Harrelson, January Jones, Kevin Nealon, Marisa Tomei, John C. Reilly, and none other than Guzmán.

I felt incredibly privileged to be a part of that film, let me tell you. It was an absolute thrill, almost surreal. You know, the moment I found out I’d be working alongside Jack Nicholson, well, it was like a dream come true! I hold Adam Sandler and John Turturro in high regard, and everyone else involved, but when you share a set with Jack Nicholson… there’s just no comparison. It doesn’t get any better than that.
