Following her impressive roles in the Kill Bill series, Uma Thurman took a break from action movies for over two decades. Now, she’s opening up about why she made that choice.

In 2021, following a gap of 21 years, Uma Thurman re-entered the action movie genre with “The Old Guard 2.” Previously, she had steered clear of this genre due to concerns about being typecast and ending up in B movies, a label often associated with action flicks. Instead, the actress sought out new challenges and endeavored to demonstrate her versatility through various projects, rather than limiting herself to just one category, as she expressed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

I’ve never been particularly drawn to the action in the “Kill Bill” series as I didn’t want to get tied up in a lot of B-grade action films. Once you’re associated with “Kill Bill”, there’s always this pressure about what comes next, like, “Be cautious about your next move.” So, I opted to focus on other projects instead.

After shunning action films for quite some time, she finally decided to switch her stance due to Charlize Theron’s remarkable performance in “The Old Guard”. Fascinated by Theron’s skills displayed in the 2020 movie, she felt inspired to back Theron up and act alongside her. Consequently, she consented to confront Theron again in the sequel.

Charlize Theron was simply amazing in “[The Old Guard]”. It sparked an idea: “Why not join her in this? Pushing the genre boundaries she’s setting. I’ll back her up, face off against her, fight alongside her…”, I thought. She was simply outstanding in that role. I also found it a remarkably unique action movie, rich with character development and emotional depth, truly touching.
