This week, I was thrilled to be part of the crowd witnessing the grand opening ceremonies of The Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida. Today, none other than Al Roker, a beloved figure known for his weathercasting and TV personality, graced us with his presence as he joined NBC’s team (Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer) to mark the debut of this exciting new Universal theme park. What really caught my attention, though, was when Al tried on a piece of merchandise from the How To Train Your Dragon collection! I can’t get enough of how he embraced the fun and excitement that this new park offers!
At Universal’s Epic Universe, visitors are transported across five unique realms, one of which is inspired by DreamWorks’ “How To Train Your Dragon” and features the Isle of Berk. Naturally, there are various Toothless merchandise for enthusiasts to purchase and flaunt throughout the parks. Don’t miss Al Roker testing out a Toothless mask โ it’s quite entertaining! Be sure to take a look:

The presenter donned the Glowing Toothless Mask from How To Train Your Dragon, available for $48 on Universal’s online shop and also sold in the parks. During a merchandise segment, the 70-year-old figure delighted viewers by continuously opening the movable mask. He ceased speaking altogether and merely kept his mouth open, repeatedly activating the feature, making it incredibly endearing.
Since 2023, Al Roker has embraced the role of grandpa, and he’s undeniably infusing that enthusiasm into network morning television, as evident in this adorable moment. Here are a few aspects that particularly resonate with me about this short video.
1) It’s heartwarmingly sweet and endearing.
2) The mask, though absurdly fun, is also remarkably well-crafted.
3) Seeing the esteemed Al Roker participating in such an amusing activity brings me immense pleasure.
Doesn’t it spark your curiosity to give it a try yourself? I must admit, I’m curious if Al Roker and the Today Show team also indulged in Isle of Berk’s attractions. The heart of Hogsmeade (I meant to say Hogwarts) features a main ride called Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, which is essentially a rollercoaster that navigates the entire park. There are two smaller rides named Dragon Racer’s Rally and Fyre Drill, a live performance called The Untrainable Dragon, and a kids play area called Viking Training Camp. It certainly looks impressive! Our team member Dirk Libbey visited and rode every ride in Epic Universe; you can see where he ranked them all.
Besides the Isle of Berk making its debut for public visitation, the “How to Train Your Dragon” live-action film is one of the 2025 movies set to release this coming summer, on June 13. This movie will provide a more tangible Viking environment for Toothless and live-action actors to share the screen. It was recently previewed with positive reception, and we’ve even caught glimpses of early footage and shared our initial impressions.
There’s a strong possibility that Toothless will become even more well-known this summer, and it might even spark a new trend, possibly even by Al Roker.
