As a huge fan of Luc Besson’s films, I have to admit that “The Fifth Element” holds a special place in my heart. The movie’s success is undeniable – it grossed over $263.9 million against a budget of $90 million and has garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. However, it seems one of its stars, Gary Oldman, doesn’t share the same sentiment.
I absolutely adore Luc Besson’s masterpiece, “The Fifth Element.” This sci-fi gem has left a significant mark on cinema, raking in an impressive $263.9 million at the box office against a modest budget of $90 million. The film’s allure is undeniable, with critics and audiences alike showering it with praise on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes. However, even among such ardent admirers, there exists an exception – one of its esteemed stars chose to express their less-than-favorable views during a recent interview.
During an interview with Playboy [conducted by AV Club], Gary Oldman shared his hesitance and the reasons behind his decision to be a part of this production. He didn’t explicitly mention that it was solely due to the director of the project, whom he wanted to help out in return.
I shudder at the thought. It was my responsibility to pay for my film “Nil by Mouth” production costs as Luc had contributed part of it. He contacted me, requesting my help on a film project. I hadn’t even reviewed the script; it was a favor from him.
Despite the enduring popularity of the project, Gary Oldman holds no fondness for it, as he feels differently about his portrayal of Jean-Baptiste Zorg in Luc Besson’s visually stunning production. Co-starring alongside Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich among others, Oldman fails to appreciate the significance of his role in this successful endeavor.
Gary Oldman took on the role in The Fifth Element, despite it being just a job for him, as a favor to Besson to help get his own project, which he both wrote and directed (Nil by Mouth), off the ground. Both films were released in the same year.
