During a one-hour Nintendo Switch 2 presentation, fans of The Legend of Zelda were surprised with an upcoming sequel to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Collaboratively developed with Koei Tecmo Games, the makers of the Dynasty Warriors series, this game continues the tradition of hack-and-slash action games where prominent characters from The Legend of Zelda series face off against countless enemies. Set before the events of Tears of the Kingdom, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment follows Zelda on a journey through time.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment announced during Nintendo Switch 2 Direct
In a shift from their past fluctuations, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, produced by Koei Tecmo Games, was warmly received upon its release in January. Although I haven’t had the chance to play this latest title myself, it suggests that the development team has recently struck gold, which could potentially elevate the upcoming Hyrule Warriors game as well.
Intriguingly, throughout the entire trailer, it seems as if our typical hero, Link from the famed _The Legend of Zelda_ series, is nowhere to be found. It’s plausible that in this game, Link may not be a playable character at all. Similar to the latest Echoes of Wisdom, we might witness an introductory scene featuring Link, but for the remainder of the game, it could be Zelda who takes center stage. Having two games centered around Zelda back-to-back is exciting news, and I’m thrilled that the series isn’t hesitant to move away from its iconic protagonist when the story demands it.
Instead, it appears that the game’s trailer hints at the possibility of controlling previous winners who are encountered within Tears of the Kingdom. This aligns with the experience in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, where players were empowered to command the defeated champions Link saves in Breath of the Wild. The previewable scenes within Tears of the Kingdom have already sparked anticipation about this narrative’s direction.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about this new game that seems tailor-made for fans of epic battles akin to those in the Dynasty Warriors series, or those eager to delve deeper into the lore of games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. It’s heartening to see Nintendo placing faith in other developers with their iconic properties. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is slated for release on the upcoming Switch 2, but for now, all we have is the promise that it will be available this winter.
