As a long-time fan of the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and frustration upon learning that Idea Factory and Compile Heart have finally brought the Re;Birth trilogy to the PlayStation 4 in Japan. It’s been a decade since these games first graced our PS3 consoles, and now, they’re available on the newer generation of PlayStations, albeit only in Japanese for now.
Idea Factory and Compile Heart have made both Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2: Sisters Generation and Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3: V Generation available for digital download on PlayStation 4 in Japan. This means that the entire trilogy of remakes known as the Re;Birth series is now accessible on PS4, although it’s important to note that they are currently only released in Japan.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to say that both of these titles initially graced the screens of PlayStation 3 consoles. The sequel, known as Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, made its debut in Japan back in 2011 and followed suit in the West a year later, in 2012. The third installment, Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory, came out in Japan and the West in 2013. Fast forward to 2014, Compile Heart reimagined these games as Re;Birth 2 and 3, with the former making its debut on PlayStation Vita in Japan first.
In simple terms, about 12 years have passed since the initial release of the PS3, and around 10 years have elapsed since the first remake versions were launched on PSV. These timeframes mark when both games became playable natively on the PS4 (and also on the PS5 due to backwards compatibility). Unfortunately, as of these releases, the PS4 versions are only accessible in Japanese.
Despite not being explicitly stated in the recent press release from Japan, it’s worth noting that the Neptunia Re;Birth trilogy is available on PC through Steam. Interestingly, these are currently the only versions with English subtitle support. Initially, Idea Factory International intended to launch the Switch versions of the Re;Birth trilogy in the West around May, nearly simultaneously with Japan. However, while the Japanese Switch adaptations were released as scheduled, the company delayed the Western releases and has yet to disclose new dates, even after unveiling the Japanese PS4 editions today.
