As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be diving into the world of Hydlide II: Shine of Darkness, which is getting an update for the Nintendo Switch! D4 Enterprise is bringing the MSX version of this classic game to our consoles on May 22nd. You can find all the details about the new port on their Project EGG Console website and also on the Nintendo eShop. Can’t wait to explore this adventure together!
The final release of Hydlide II for the MSX platform occurred in November 1986, about a year after T&E Soft initially launched it on PC-8801 in mid-December 1985. For those interested in revisiting old-school games, the original Hydlide is a good place to start as its MSX version was recently ported to the Nintendo Switch last September 2024.
Below, you’ll discover the official screenshots and explanations for Hydlide II: Shine of Darkness. Although the game is being directly ported from its original Japanese version, some aspects, such as the story summary, have been translated into English for your convenience.

In this new adventure, you’ll be the selected hero, tasked with locking away an evil force threatening Fairyland. Use your magical abilities to claim a battlefield six times bigger than the one in the last game!
In 1986, T&E SOFT released an action role-playing game where the protagonist, chosen by a divine entity for their pure soul, embarks on a journey to lock away malevolent spirits. The combat system from the previous game returns with a fresh twist, introducing new magical abilities like Fire, Ice, Wave, and Jump. Additionally, the parameter FORTH (conscience) is introduced to depict morality. This game also offers dialogue-based information gathering, shopping in towns, character progression, and a map six times larger than its predecessor, offering more depth and content.
Back then, this game was referred to as an “Active RPG” due to its focus on action. Players can switch between attack and defense modes during combat with monsters. Defeating monsters grants experience points, enabling level-ups and increased power. When wounded, resting in open areas automatically restores health.
As a gamer, I found myself immersed in this Japanese game, but here’s the twist – while the main game and gallery screens were all in Japanese, thankfully, other menu screens and the ‘How to Play’ guides were provided in English. This made navigating the game a bit easier for me, as I’m more fluent in English.
