Hunter Schafer’s New Passport Lists Her Gender as ‘Male’ After Trump Executive Order: ‘I Am Never Going to Stop Being Trans. F— This Administration’

Hunter Schafer, a well-known trans actress best known for her roles in “Euphoria,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and the upcoming “Blade Runner 2099,” as well as various other projects, shared a video on TikTok detailing that her updated passport now identifies her as male. This change is attributed to Donald Trump’s executive order mandating the recognition of only two genders: Male and female.

During Trump’s inauguration, he signed an executive order stating that only two genders, male and female, would be recognized by the state. This decision led to the Bureau of Consular Affairs halting passport applications for changes or renewals in gender markers, as well as new applications with a gender marker different from the one assigned at birth,” Schafer explained in the video.

Schafer confessed that at first, she was skeptical the policy would be implemented due to the fact that “our president often talks a lot… However, today, I found out differently when I saw ‘male’ written in my newly issued passport.

Schafer mentioned that their gender markers were initially altered during their teenage years, starting with their driver’s license and followed by passports. Since then, all have been designated as female. Generally, there haven’t been any issues. However, a problem arose last year while filming in Barcelona when their car was broken into, and their passport—valid until their 30s—was stolen along with other belongings. As a result, they received an emergency passport, valid only for a year. Upon returning to the U.S., they needed to replace it with a permanent one. They visited the Federal Passport Agency in L.A. today and completed the process. This wasn’t their first time going through this procedure, and nothing about it was different. They filled out all the necessary paperwork as usual, indicating female, but when they opened the new passport today, they found that the gender marker had been changed to male.

Schafer expressed her views on the issue not for the purpose of causing a stir or seeking comfort, but rather to emphasize the authenticity of the situation since it’s truly unfolding. What surprised me is that I hadn’t anticipated this event would transpire in reality.

Schafer stated, “I’ve never altered my birth certificate, which makes me suspect that authorities handling passports and similar matters now cross-check birth certificates, or at least something in the processing system has changed. This is a new experience for me since I updated my gender marker, and it’s been about a decade since then. I believe this change is connected to the current administration in our country, and I’m worried about how these changes are gradually enforced.

Schafer went on to say, “I’d like to add that I don’t mind the M on my passport. It doesn’t fundamentally alter who I am or my trans identity, but it does make certain aspects of life more challenging. In my own experience, I haven’t had a chance to verify this yet, as I’ll find out next week when I travel abroad with my new passport, but I believe it will require me to disclose my identity more frequently to border control agents than I would prefer or deem necessary. On a broader scale, considering other trans women who may be experiencing the same issue, or even other trans individuals, the complications seem to multiply when it comes to the difficulties this adds to everyday life.

Schafer asserted, ‘Trans individuals are radiant.’ We’re here to stay, and my identity as trans won’t ever change, no matter what a passport says. I’m disappointed with this administration, but I don’t know how to address it effectively. However, I believe it’s crucial to speak up about these issues. This is a genuine experience, so yes, I express my frustration.

In the upcoming third season of HBO’s “Euphoria,” Schafer will once again portray the character Jules. Throughout her career, she has been a strong advocate for transgender rights and has expressed a desire to move beyond discussions solely about her identity. During interviews, she often chooses not to use the term “trans” as she prefers to be known for more than just her gender identity.

Schafer clarified to GQ magazine last year that being labeled as ‘Transsexual Actress’ wasn’t something that occurred naturally. She stated that if she didn’t assertively change it, it would continue to precede every article about her. After realizing that this label diminished her and her aspirations, she learned she didn’t want to be defined by it. Particularly after high school, she grew tired of discussing her transition. She has put in a great deal of effort to reach where she is now, beyond the challenging stages of her transition, and all she desires now is to simply be recognized as a woman and move past this aspect of her life.
