Hunt Showdown 1896 - Black Screen and Cursor Issue Explained

As a long-time fan of Hunt: Showdown, I’ve witnessed its ups and downs, and this latest update has certainly been quite a rollercoaster ride. The new peak in player count is undeniably exciting, but the black screen issue is a real thorn in the side for many of us.

In the realm of shooter games, especially those focused on extraction, there’s been a whirlwind of activity lately. This offshoot of First-Person Shooters (FPS) has been quite eventful recently, with incidents such as the rise and perhaps fall of Arena Breakout: Infinite or Delta Force: Hawk Ops successful alpha tests. Moreover, a veteran is returning to the scene with a complete overhaul, including a new subtitle – Hunt: Showdown 1896. This update has given the game a significant boost, setting a new record for concurrent players just yesterday (as per SteamDB). However, it seems that this title has more thorns than roses. In fact, it appears that many players are experiencing problems after the update, reporting nothing but black screens with only a cursor visible. If you too have encountered this issue, we will attempt to diagnose the problem and suggest potential solutions.

Black screen with cursor in Hunt Showdown 1896

It is nothing new that updates can break games. The latest one for Hunt: Showdown 1896 achieved at least three things – reached a new all-time high concurrent player count, at the same time it was a reason for players to review bomb Hunt for UI changes (at the moment only 38% of recent player reviews are positive on Steam), as well as made the game not work completely for a group of fans who can only see a black screen with cursor while launching the title. The biggest question now is – can anything be done about it?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all fix for every situation. However, it appears that solutions may exist for certain unique cases.

  1. If you have an Nvidia GPU and experience this problem, you might be in luck as many fans say that updating the graphics card drivers alleviated the issue for them.
  2. You are less lucky if you have chosen team red (AMD). Many players reporting this matter are using Radeon GPUs and so far, there is no good fix for them. Additionally, there are a lot of fans who say that only shadows look pitch black. Unfortunately, also in this case there is nothing to be done. The game asks to update the drivers at launch, yet many players claim they have the newest and nothing helps.
  3. There are Linux users who also experience this issue, too. Though they are more fortunate as in their case using Proton Experimental with “bleeding-edge” option in beta section of application properties fixes the problem.

It appears that the current predicament originates from the significant upgrade in Hunt: Showdown 1896, featuring a major shift in the game engine version. This update brought about changes to various aspects such as visuals, audio, and performance, among others. Here’s hoping that Crytek swiftly handles this issue while enhancing the user interface (UI), a topic that has ignited passionate discussions among fans. Best of luck!
