Hulu Gives Pilot Order to Nick Paley Comedy ‘Phony,’ Connie Britton Set to Star

As a devoted admirer of the illustrious world of television and film, I find myself captivated by the latest development in Connie Britton‘s illustrious career. The news that she has secured a lead role in Hulu’s upcoming pilot “Phony” is nothing short of exhilarating!

According to our sources, Hulu has commissioned the pilot episode of Nick Paley’s comedy series “Phony,” and it appears that Connie Britton will be taking on the main character in this production.

The pilot can be characterized as a captivating tale of adolescence. According to the official synopsis, it revolves around a high school student who, after being involved in a car accident, finds himself in the hospital only to realize that his mother (played by Britton) – the sole parent and closest friend he had – seems to have been replaced by an imposter.

Ellen, Britton’s character, is a dedicated single mother to Sonny and serves as the principal at his high school.

The initial plan for this project was to commence its production at Hulu in the year 2022. Paley plays the roles of writer, executive producer, and director for the pilot episode. Notably, Paley has recently collaborated as a co-writer on the acclaimed independent film “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On”, and previously held the position of director for “Broad City” at Comedy Central.

Britton not only stars in the project, but will also serve as executive producer. Charlie Alderman from Charlie’s Production Company, along with Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles, are also executive producers. Andrea Massaro, also from Goddard Textiles, will produce. The studio responsible is 20th Television; previously it was set up at ABC Signature, but this studio has since been merged into 20th TV.

Currently, Hulu is working on the freshest comedy pilot they’ve recently prepared. Simultaneously, they are also preparing another pilot titled “Downforce,” which stars Murray Bartlett and Eve Hewson and is based in the thrilling realm of professional car racing.

Britton has been nominated for five Emmy Awards, with two nods each for “Friday Night Lights” and “The White Lotus,” one for “American Horror Story,” “Nashville,” and another for “Dirty John.” Additionally, she’s appeared on shows like “9-1-1,” “Spin City,” “The West Wing,” and “24.” On the big screen, she acted in films such as the adaptation of “Friday Night Lights,” along with movies like “Promising Young Woman,” “Bombshell,” “Beatriz at Dinner,” “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” and “American Ultra.

Britton is represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Untitled Entertainment, Hansen Jacobson, and The Initiative Group; Paley is represented by Entertainment 360; while Goddard is represented by United Talent Agency (UTA).
