Hugh Jackman Recalls Cracking Spectacularly at ‘Stars’ Audition 30 Years Ago

Hugh Jackman was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables,” but his initial experience singing the musical’s “Stars” during an audition decades ago wasn’t quite smooth sailing.

During a show titled ‘An Evening With Hugh Jackman’ at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday night, Jackman shared that he initially felt things were going smoothly as he read through the script. However, when it came time for him to sing, he unfortunately faltered on the final note, causing quite an unfortunate crack. The enthusiasm in the audience seemed to disappear instantly, and Jackman felt so embarrassed that he almost wanted to flee the stage.

However, the man responded, “Whoa, hang on a minute. Why did you perform that tune?” Jackman elaborated. “I replied, ‘It’s all I had to work with musically. I apologize.’ To which he said, ‘Just discard it. You’ll never sing it again.’ I believe what he truly meant was, ‘Perhaps set it aside until around 30 years from now when you might perform it at the Hollywood Bowl.’

On Saturday night in Los Angeles, Jackman kicked off the LA Phil’s 2025 Hollywood Bowl season with his performance. At the beginning of the show, he mentioned, “I can be quite talkative, but there’s a curfew to consider.” He then joked, “Or perhaps we don’t have one.

I declared that at the close of the evening, there wouldn’t be an encore performance. “We’re putting an end to this pretense,” I stated. “The whole act of everyone exiting, but we all know the instruments remain on stage, we all know they’ll return. We’re nixing that.

Jackman was joined by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by Thomas Wilkins, and several young musicians from the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA). During his performance of “A Million Dreams” from “The Greatest Showman,” they all participated. He also sang Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” as part of a 90-minute performance. In an upcoming movie titled “Song Sung Blue,” Jackman portrays a character who impersonates Neil Diamond, and he marries a Patsy Kline impersonator played by Kate Hudson.

Hugh Jackman presented a reimagined version of John Denver’s “Thank God I’m a Country Boy,” infused with an Australian flair. In his rendition, he crooned, “Australians are quite relaxed,” he sang. “I believe it’s the finest spot on the globe, aside from the rare shark encounter, thank goodness I’m an Aussie lad.

He carried on singing, “We dwell in a location encircled by the sea and koalas lounging amidst eucalyptus trees,” followed by a burst of laughter when he added, “And it’s marvelous to note that every girl resembles Margot Robbie, fortunately I’m an Australian!

As a film enthusiast myself, I had the privilege of stepping onto a stage once dressed in a sleek tuxedo, not just as the star of “Wolverine,” but also as an entertainer paying tribute to the legendary Peter Allen. In 2004, for the musical “The Boy From Oz,” my performance earned me the prestigious Tony Award for Best Actor. The honor was a testament to the life and talent of the late Oscar winner, Peter Allen.

The night’s grand finale, marked by the traditional fireworks show from the Bowl, managed to gather a total of $2.6 million for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s educational and community initiatives.

The upcoming Hollywood Bowl season in 2025 features Cynthia Erivo and Adam Lambert taking center stage in “Jesus Christ Superstar” for a span of two evenings, specifically on the 1st and 2nd of August.

The summer event lineup includes the participation of Gustavo Dudamel, Mumford & Sons, John Fogerty, Juanes, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, Dave Koz, Josh Groban, Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as sing-alongs for “Grease” and “The Sound of Music,” concerts themed around “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park,” Alabama Shakes, Herbie Hancock, a tribute to John Williams, and performances by Charlie Wilson, Babyface, K-Ci Hailey, and John Legend.
