For a while now, Nintendo has been trailing in certain social aspects, but they’re planning significant enhancements with the Nintendo Switch 2, particularly in terms of communication between players during gameplay. Let me fill you in on the exciting new feature called GameChat on the Nintendo Switch 2.
How to set up GameChat on Switch 2
Here’s a more casual and user-friendly way of explaining the new feature:
“Check out the fresh GameChat icon at the bottom of your home screen! You can tap it or press the new C button on your right Joy-Con or Pro Controller to open up GameChat features. Typically, you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership for this, but since we’re in an open-access period until March 31, 2026, everyone can use it! Just remember, if you don’t have the subscription yet, the button will be inactive for now.
When you initially configure your GameChat account, a user agreement will appear for your review. To access the platform’s features, you must agree to its terms, but you have the flexibility to revoke your consent at any time by revisiting the GameChat settings menu. Additionally, during setup, you’ll be asked to share a phone number, which will then require verification via text message.
In GameChat, you’ll only be able to converse with friends that have been approved by you during the setup process. During this stage, your list of potential friends will be displayed, enabling you to choose those who can chat with you through GameChat. Once this step is finished, you’ll then have the choice to create a new chat, view your chat list, or adjust settings.
With Start Chat, you can initiate a voice conversation with any of your chosen friends, provided they have followed the necessary setup process for their In-Game Chat, as detailed previously. On the other hand, Friend Invitations List showcases invites from friends who’ve already set up a chat. Lastly, the Settings tab enables you to modify your chat-enabled friend list, adjust microphone settings, flag any troublesome chatters, and revisit the GameChat terms of service.
GameChat serves as a tool for establishing GameShare for remote gaming sessions. If your gameplay isn’t happening in the same room, it must be initiated through GameChat. Regardless of who owns the game, all players involved can use GameShare to play the same game across long-distance connections as long as the GameChat session remains active.
Initially, the proprietor of a GameShare-compatible title should locate the GameShare feature within the game itself. Subsequently, those who do not possess the game must navigate to the GameShare option on the Nintendo Switch 2’s home menu, and then opt for the GameChat Session.
12 players are the maximum number who can participate in a chat simultaneously on the platform, and during these chats, you can attach a compatible USB-C camera for a more interactive visual experience. A dedicated USB-C camera for the console, namely the Nintendo Switch 2 camera, is available for separate purchase. To connect your camera to the console, simply plug it into the USB-C port located atop the device and initiate GameChat. While any USB-C camera can be used, not all cameras may function optimally. In order to verify if your camera is compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, navigate to System Settings, then Controllers & Accessories, where you will find the Test USB Camera option. Utilize this feature to determine whether your camera works seamlessly with the console.
For parents, remember that GameChat offers parental controls which can restrict your child’s access to video chatting within the GameChat platform.
