As a seasoned survivor of the Frostlands, I’ve braved the cold and the harsh terrain countless times, and I must say, nothing quite compares to the thrill of establishing Trails and Skyways in Frostpunk 2. The game has an uncanny ability to make resource management feel like a life-or-death situation, and it’s this sense of urgency that keeps me coming back for more.
In the grand expanse of Frostpunk 2, the city of New London represents just a fragment of the Frostlands. For those daring enough to brave the chill, there are opportunities to delve into its mysteries using Trails and Skyways for exploration.
Initially in the game, you gain access to the Frostlands map, but it’s just a part of it. You need to search for fuel before your Coal reserves deplete, and you have around four weeks to create a Pathway link to transport whatever you discover back to your Camp.
Your adventure in creating Trails and Skyways networks for transporting resources and people between the Outpost and its various colonies is just commencing. This handbook will walk you through understanding each system’s functionality and setting up an efficient transportation network.
How Trails work in Frostpunk 2
Connecting Outposts through trails enables resource and population exchange. This means you can move resources and people from one outpost to another when they’re linked.
How to connect the Trails
If you’re on the first chapter and wish to link Trails for sending Colonists to your freshly found settlement, follow these steps:
- Click the circle on the right corner of the Frostland map (which you can open by pressing V.
- With the Trail tool open, connect the path from the Old Dreadnaught to New London.
- You can connect it directly, instead, go bit by bit by placing markers on the black spots until you get there.
- Once you reach the marker next to New London, click it and select the check to start building it.
Remember that although Trails are affordable, they do necessitate the use of resources. Specifically, you will need 10 Frostland Teams, 25 Heatstamps for each segment of the route, and 5 Prefabs per segment. Each section between markers constitutes a single route segment in your Trail.
Why can’t I place a Trail on the red dots?
To establish a trail, it’s necessary that the territory is already mapped out. Until an unexplored region on your map is surveyed, setting up a trail in that specific area remains impossible for now.
Initially, to embark on an expedition, pick an unexplored region, such as the Highlands, and then opt for ‘Launch Expedition’. Keep in mind that expeditions necessitate Frostland Teams, and they could range from risky to life-threatening, potentially causing harm to some of your Scouts. This risk can be reduced with the help of the Research Institute.
How to set up a Skyway in Frostpunk 2
Trails vs. Skyways
After a couple of hours, you’ll be ready to graduate to Skyways and leave those Trails in the dust. Skyways work just like Trails, but they cost a bit more: 10 Frostland Teams, 50 Heatstamps per route segment, and 20 Prefabs per route segment.
Skyways come with an upgrade, though: You can ship up to 600 resources, which is more than double the Trails’ 250 limit.
How to unlock Skyways
After constructing the Research Institute, you’ll gain access to Skyways. Navigate to the Ideas Tree using key R and select the Frostland tab. Within this section, you’ll discover the Skyways concept among your Outposts’ core beliefs. You can unlock it by parting with 50 Heatstamps.
