As a devoted fan, I’ve come to realize that learning the art of selling pilfered goods in Oblivion is among the initial ventures for an ambitious ne’er-do-well or even a regular RPG enthusiast with a mischievous streak. In truth, when I’m playing a virtuous character, I find myself acting like a notorious thief, and I’d wager I’m far from the only one. Being a thief in Oblivion offers an exceptionally profitable playstyle, and it might just be the most gratifying thieving experience throughout the entire series, given that merchants have an endless supply of gold at their disposal.
If you’re fed up with picking locks to steal valuable items, you may also be interested in finding the Skeleton Key to simplify the process. Regardless of your method, here’s a guide on selling stolen goods – the ones represented by the small hand symbol, indicating you’ve taken them – in Oblivion.
How to sell stolen items in Oblivion Remastered
If you want to peddle ill-gotten goods, you’ll need someone who buys such items – often referred to as a ‘fence’. Unfortunately, there’s only one such individual, Manheim Maulhand, who runs the Inn of Ill Omen on the road connecting the Imperial City and Bravil. However, he has a 50 gold limit and is located far away from civilization. In my opinion, it would be more beneficial for you to join the Thieves Guild instead.
Once you become a member, you can offload your ill-gotten merchandise to Ongar the Fatigued, who resides in Bruma. You’ll find him either at his residence, situated south of the church, or inside Olav’s Tap and Tack, slightly to the left upon entering the city. Ongar accepts up to 600 gold pieces for your goods, a sum that should be sufficient for beginnings. As you continue to sell stolen items and complete specific tasks, you will advance within the guild, eventually gaining access to dealers with higher purchase limits in various other cities.
If you’re unsure about which fences are at your disposal, visit Armand Christophe in the Garden of Dareloth, located on the Imperial City Waterfront, at midnight. Select the “About the Thieves Guild” dialogue option and then ask “Where can I find a fence?” This will provide you with a list of all available fences except for Manheim Maulhand. Armand will guide you to each one when you pick their name.
