How to play Marathon Alpha. „Early access” is not for all

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m no stranger to Bungie and their iconic Halo games or Destiny series. But what some gamers might not know is that this studio has another franchise under its belt – Marathon. For those of us who can remember back to the ’90s, it was a game available on Macintosh systems. Now, it’s making a comeback as an online FPS, falling into the extraction shooter subgenre.

There were mixed feelings when developers started hyping up this game ahead of the gameplay reveal trailer. If, like me, you’re uncertain about this production and want to test the waters without investing money right away, there’s good news! A series of Alpha tests are being organized, offering an early access experience.

However, there’s a catch – keep reading to find out more!

Marathon alpha tests explained

Previewing a game ahead of time can significantly influence your decision to purchase it later. This is especially true for games that employ a traditional pay-to-play model, such as Marathon from Bungie. They offer us a chance to evaluate their work before its official launch on September 23rd, 2025, which coincidentally mirrors the release date of Borderlands 4. To gain access to these closed alpha tests, you typically need to:

1. Keep an eye on the game’s official website or social media channels for announcements about upcoming testing opportunities.
2. Sign up for the game’s newsletter or follow their accounts to stay updated on test sign-ups and other related news.
3. Participate in online communities dedicated to the game, as developers often use these platforms to recruit testers.
4. If possible, attend gaming events where the developer may showcase the game and offer opportunities for hands-on testing.

To begin with, you need to head over to Marathon’s official Discord server. Once there, go to the “#alpha_access” channel and type “/alpha”. Afterward, respond to the prompts displayed in the channel. Upon answering a few questions, you will be provided with a unique link that enables you to register for Alpha tests on bungie.net.

You’ll have the exciting opportunity to decide where you want to take the tests, whether it’s on PS5, Xbox, or PC. However, remember that not every submission will be selected. If you get an email from “[email protected]” containing details about participating in the alpha tests, consider yourself fortunate. And since there is no NDA in place, feel free to share your gameplay videos, feedback, or even stream for hours without any restrictions.
