As a seasoned Frostpunk 2 survivor who has braved countless whiteouts and huddled through more winter storms than I care to remember, I can confidently say that knowing how to generate Coal efficiently is a survival skill worth mastering.
In the chilly world of Frostpunk 2, efficiently utilizing your fuel supplies is crucial for survival – it might not be the final goal, but it certainly plays a significant role. Among the game’s fuels, Coal stands out as one of the most robust and versatile options. Here’s a guide on how to increase your Coal production in Frostpunk 2.
Best ways to make more Coal in Frostpunk 2
Most efficient Coal extraction in Frostpunk 2
In Frostpunk 2, one way of gathering Coal initially is by extracting it from shallow seams close to New London’s central district. As your city expands, the need for Coal escalates significantly to meet the growing demand. To maintain a balance, you should explore alternative methods of producing more Coal that Extraction Districts might not be able to fully sustain on their own.
Research Dust Coal Mine
Initially, it’s crucial to maximize the potential of your Shallow Coal Seams. Once you’ve established your Extraction Districts, focus on developing the Dust Coal Mine technology (since the Blasting Coal Mine depletes resources faster, it’s important to conserve them, irrespective of Faction alignment). Make sure to construct at least one. This will ensure that your Coal Seams last longer, even up until Chapter 3 post the initial Whiteout storm.
Research Charcoal Regeneration Plant
After you’ve started gathering Wood Materials from the extensive frozen forests located in the southern parts of New London, your next step is to brainstorm about setting up a Charcoal Regeneration Plant. This plant will enable us to transform these gathered Wood Materials into Charcoal.
Instead of using the Pyrolytic Charcoal Plant, which carries out the same fundamental task, we advise considering an alternative due to its lower coal output and increased heat demand (a factor you should aim to reduce wherever possible). After researching this idea, construct your Charcoal Regeneration Plant within one of your Extraction Districts for optimal usage. As you build more of these plants, your coal reserves will gradually increase.
Find Coal in Frostlands
Don’t forget, you can also further boost those Coal stores by scouting the Frostlands and finding outposts in various regions with sources of Coal ripe for the taking. Use your available Frostlander teams to set up a supply line that will last you for a considerable amount of time until the source eventually runs dry.
Abandon Coal and switch to Oil
In the later stages of the game, oil becomes more valuable than coal, so make an effort to stockpile oil and prioritize its discovery. Once you’ve set up a colony with oil reserves, coal will become obsolete for your primary operations. You can use any excess coal reserves to assist colonies that still rely on them. Also, remember to decommission coal mines in Frostlands when focusing on oil exploration to maximize the number of workers available for further exploration.
