The latest Skate game is out now in early access! It’s free to play, but not everything is immediately available. The game has an in-game shop where you can use different currencies to buy cosmetic items to customize your skateboard and character.
The shop in Skate can be a little confusing to use, so we’ve created a guide to help you understand the game’s two different types of currency. We’ll explain how to earn each one and what you can buy with it.
How to make money in Skate
Skate features two types of in-game currency: San Van Bucks and Rip Chips. San Van Bucks are represented by a pink bird icon, and Rip Chips by an orange hexagon. You can check your balance of both currencies in the Skate lobby by going to the main menu and selecting the “Store” tab – it’s the furthest option on the right.
Okay, so if you’re just starting out in Skate, or haven’t put a ton of hours in yet, you probably won’t have much in-game cash. Honestly, don’t even worry about San Van Bucks right away – that’s the stuff you have to actually *buy* with real money, so you won’t have any of that at the beginning!
On the Skate store page, scroll to the bottom to view the various San Van Bucks packages and their prices. Here’s a look at what’s available:
- 500 SVB – $4.99
- 1,050 SVB – $9.99
- 2,800 SVB – $24.99
- 5,900 SVB – $49.99
- 12,000 SVB – $99.99
When you buy San Van Bucks, you’ll be taken to your device’s store to complete the purchase. After you’ve paid, you’ll automatically be brought back to the Skate app, and your San Van Bucks will be added to your account.
Rip Chips are completely free to earn in Skate – you just get them by completing challenges. When you finish Challenge Goals in any of San Vansterdam’s neighborhoods, you’ll earn both Rip Chips and Rep. The more challenges you complete, the more neighborhoods you’ll unlock, letting you earn even more! When you first start playing, you only have access to one neighborhood.
Skate’s free and paid cosmetics
So, now that you know how to get these currencies, let’s talk about how to use them. You can spend both types of currency in the in-game shop, and you’ll find that most of the items available – like clothing and accessories – cost San Van Bucks.
You can buy almost anything in the shop using San Van Bucks. This includes both individual items to customize your board and character, and larger bundles with a variety of cosmetics. These bundles cost between 2,800 and 5,900 San Van Bucks, while individual items are generally priced from 200 to 1,000 San Van Bucks.
Okay, so there’s this whole section in the shop just for Rip Chips, which is awesome. If you look right above where they sell San Van Bucks, you’ll see three different colored boxes. You can spend your Rip Chips to open them and get cool rewards! The thing is, each box is tied to a specific neighborhood. The more Rip Chips you earn in a neighborhood, the more chances you get to open *that* neighborhood’s box. It’s a good way to spend those chips and get stuff related to where you’ve been grinding!
Earning in-game currency (Rip Chips) in Skate takes time, but it’s a simple way to unlock new character customizations without spending real money. Just remember to regularly open your reward boxes and check how many Rip Chips you have to keep the rewards coming.
