How to Get to the Undercoast in Esoteric Ebb

This isn’t your typical RPG where there’s only one way to skin a cat. Seriously, it feels like you can approach everything in the game in multiple ways, which is awesome. But honestly, sometimes that freedom can get a little overwhelming, and I found myself totally lost in a few quests, trying to figure out what to do next.

Discovering how to reach the Undercoast is a challenging quest. It requires completing certain actions in a specific sequence or having a particular character build, making it somewhat difficult. However, accessing the Undercoast is essential to continue the main storyline.

This guide explains your choices, and includes a last-resort option if the others don’t work. We hope the instructions below help you resolve the issue without needing that backup plan.

Finding the Entrance to the Undercoast

If you want to find the entrance, you’ll have to get into the City Below. Once you’re there, you can search around, but the entrance itself is currently located at the end of a dangerous, booby-trapped hallway in the northern section of the city.

If you’re not playing a Cleric focused on Wisdom, it’s a good idea to talk to Azkel first – he can help you locate the door. While it’s possible to proceed without him, starting with Azkel will make things much easier. We’ll be using his guidance as the first method for finding the entrance to the Undercoast.

Doing Akzel’s Quest

If you travel north from the City Below, you’ll find an open space with a dwarf mining rocks. To reach the blocked-off area, head towards the small shrine at the back and use the step to the right of it.

After you speak with him, he’ll mention he’s looking for a lost ruin, but the Hollowborn Watchtower won’t allow him to explore that region. You can either go south towards the Roots and ask Moongrove for help, or continue directly through the tunnel marked with the “Beware Monsters” sign.

You have a good chance of finding Meek as you travel through most of the same locations anyway.

Okay, so I followed the path until it split. I decided to be sneaky and take the left path – it let me avoid that creepy Roper and get to the other ruins. Once I was there, I checked out this mosaic, and it actually gave me the answer Azkel was looking for! After that, it was just a simple backtrack to give him the info.

He’s going to give you a pickaxe with the Detect Magic spell embedded in it. It’s simple to remove the spell, and once you do, you can go back to the hallway with the traps and use it after you’ve gotten it ready.

The Wisdom Build Cleric

Okay, so this part’s gonna take a while. I need to run around and collect stuff to boost my wisdom stat before I can even find the door. Honestly, I probably need to grind a bit and level up anyway – the Undercoast is seriously tough, so I better be prepared!

You can find lots of items to boost your wisdom stat, but here’s what I personally used to maximize it:

  • Key to Nowhere — +2 Wisdom
  • Hex Weekly — +2 Wisdom
  • Incense Bowl — +1 Wisdom
  • Spectral Halberd — +2 Wisdom

If you want to be wiser, you can simply increase your wisdom stat when you level up. Otherwise, if you can’t raise your wisdom enough, try the alternative approach.

If neither of those choices work for you, a ghost will appear at your door on the fourth day and allow you to enter.

Once you’ve successfully completed either of these steps, the door will appear, and you’ll be able to open it. However, be warned: opening the door instantly triggers a fight with the Masked Assassin, who is a challenging opponent. Make sure you’re ready for a tough battle!
