As a hardcore gamer immersed in the post-apocalyptic world of Atomfall, I can tell you that scouring the Quarantine Zone for survival tools is crucial. Among these essential items, the Metal Detector stands out as an indispensable asset, helping me unearth hidden riches scattered across the game’s diverse maps. Unlike some other tools, this isn’t something you start with; instead, it’s hidden and needs to be found. But don’t worry, there are a few straightforward spots where you can track down a Metal Detector. I’ll walk you through those locations and explain how to use the Metal Detector in our upcoming guide.
How to find the Metal Detector in Atomfall
Luckily, you won’t have to wait much before stumbling upon the opportunity to add the Metal Detector to your gear. The initial spot where this item can be procured is at Molly Jowett’s trading post in Slatten Dale. Keep in mind that the items in a trader’s inventory tend to change frequently, so it’s possible that Molly may not have the Metal Detector when you first start your game. Here’s how to get the Metal Detector from Molly, but if she doesn’t have it, we’ll also provide an alternative method.
Molly’s trading post is situated in the northern region of Slatten Dale (coordinates 26.4E, 79.1N) and lies northeast of one of the entrances to the Sewer Tunnels. At this trading post, you can interact with Molly and potentially negotiate for some of her items up for sale. If fortune favors you, you might find a Metal Detector among her goods. Additionally, she may offer a Flashlight and even a key to access the Sewer Tunnels.
In Atomfall, instead of using traditional currency, you engage in trade by exchanging items from your personal stock with Molly. Since Molly values certain items more than others, selecting the appropriate gear for barter is crucial. Keep in mind that traders like Molly will update their inventory throughout the game, so it’s beneficial to regularly check back and see what new items they may have available.
A more convenient approach would be to place the Metal Detector right in the center of the trade screen. This will ensure that you have the upper hand throughout the transaction. Then, gradually add items from your inventory until the balance is even on the centerline. Once equilibrium is achieved, you can finalize the exchange and claim the Metal Detector as yours.
If you prefer not to trade with Molly, there’s a complimentary Metal Detector located near a small body of water to the southeast in Slatten Dale, which is where Molly can be found on the map. If you’ve already ventured into Skethermoor, another opportunity exists for you to obtain a Metal Detector within Atomfall. Skethermoor is another map accessible through the Sewer Tunnels in Slatten Dale or by passing through Wyndham Village. The entrance coordinates for Wyndham Village are 29.0E, 79.4N.
In the town of Skethermoor, navigate towards the north, located southwest from the “Skethermoor” label in the upper right corner of its map. There, you’ll come across a place known as Brinsop Manor. Once there, move to the back left corner of the manor’s boundaries. You’ll find a deceased individual dressed in a hazardous materials suit leaning against a fence close to a tiny shed. Search the deceased character to obtain a complimentary Metal Detector lying on their body.
If you don’t currently possess a Metal Detector in your collection, feel free to add this item to your stash without concern for running out of storage space. Each tool in Atomfall has its designated spot within your inventory, ensuring they won’t encroach upon your precious item slots.
How to use the Metal Detector in Atomfall
After obtaining the metal detector, your goal becomes continual exploration across various maps, accomplishing tasks, and uncovering fresh locations.
In due course, the Metal Detector symbol will show up on your Heads-Up Display (HUD), and you’ll hear a beeping sound. This means you can activate the Metal Detector. To do so in Atomfall, press the tool key, which is Q on PC. Once you’ve brought out the Metal Detector, follow the subsequent instructions to locate a hidden treasure cache using it:
1. Move your character towards the location where you want to search for the cache.
2. Swing the Metal Detector around in a circular motion to scan the area.
3. If the detector indicates a strong metal signal, dig at that spot to uncover the cache.
4. Open the cache to reveal its contents.
- With the Metal Detector in your hands, press and hold the “aim” button (right-click on PC)
- Continue to aim the Metal Detector at the ground and pay attention to the numbered gauge on the tool
- This gauge lets you know how far or close you are to the buried cache. If you’re near 0-2 on the gauge, you’re not close. The closer you are to 10, the closer the buried cache is.
- The red buttons on top of the gauge let you know the direction of the cache. If the red button is lit up in the center, then you’re going the right way. If the red button is on either side of the middle one, go in that direction to start facing the right way.
- As long as you follow the gauges and keep aiming at the ground, you’ll find the buried cache. This is indicated by the gauge reaching 10 and the red buttons lighting up all at once.
- When this happens, press the “dig” button to loot your buried cache.
- Buried caches can be anywhere in Atomfall, including inside bunkers, and they are in extremely precise locations.
Here it is – learning to operate the Metal Detector in Atomfall! It’s a bit tricky sometimes since it might be hard to discern its desired direction. However, listen for its beeping sounds to find hidden troves of additional survival supplies.
