How to get a Speartuna Fin in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, if you’re on the hunt for the Speartuna Fin specifically, it seems you’ve progressed far enough in the game to have ventured into High Rank. There, within the blacksmith weapon tree, you might come across the Frozen Speartuna – a frosty swordfish (or marlin, perhaps?) that functions like a Great Sword. If, like me, its unique characteristics have piqued your interest and made it an item you desire to craft, then continue your quest!

To create a sword for the swordfish, you’ll require a Speartuna Fin initially, and if you wish to max out its potential, you’ll need five more. Keep in mind that this rare fish can be tricky to locate. Here’s an efficient method to find a Speartuna Fin in Monster Hunter Wilds without spending countless hours at every fishing spot:

1. Head to the Eastern Great Forest, where the Speartuna Fin is most commonly found.
2. Use the Fish-O-Matic device to locate schools of fish.
3. Look for the Speartuna Fin among the schools, as it tends to be more elusive than other species.
4. Cast your line when you spot a school containing the fin.
5. Be patient and persistent; it may take several attempts before you catch one.
6. Repeat this process until you have the required number of fins for your weapon upgrade.

Monster Hunter Wilds Speartuna Fin location

To obtain a Speartuna Fin, fishing is the key: You won’t find this fin just anywhere; it requires fishing for a Speartuna. Although materials for the Frozen Speartuna weapon can usually be sourced from the Iceshard Cliffs, the Speartuna itself can only be found and caught in the Scarlet Forest.

As a fan, I’d recommend that you activate the Fallow season in your camp if it isn’t already, given Speartunas are prevalent during this time. After making the switch, make your way to Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest. It’s easily identifiable as it boasts a massive lake reservoir on the map’s highest level. Here, in battles with Uth Duna, you can even loot shipwreckage by pulling it down!

Upon arrival, make your way towards the shoreline. It may take some time for the Speartuna fish to appear in this spot, but don’t worry – they’re relatively easy to identify: They’re large fish with a sail-like fin on their back. Keep an eye out for schools of smaller fish nearby, as they can trigger a feeding frenzy among the Harpios wingdrakes. If you notice these birds diving into the water, be sure to check if any Speartuna are participating in the feeding frenzy; it’s not uncommon for them to spawn two fish at once during this active period.

If during your inspection of the waterline, you find no Speartunas, it would be wise for you to move towards the nearby Great Lake Shore Campsite pop-up camp and rejuvenate the area by letting it rest again (Fallow). Unfortunately, catching a Speartuna isn’t as straightforward as just finding one, so if you haven’t done so already, establishing a camp at Area 17 could be beneficial for upgrading your Frozen Speartuna fully. Luckily, there’s a campsite right near that spot!

How to catch Speartuna in Monster Hunter Wilds

In contrast to the numerous fish you can capture by just pressing the right trigger, the Speartuna is no ordinary catch. It’s more like a “giant” or “huge” fish found in Monster Hunter Wilds, and catching it requires mastering a mini-game instead of a simple press of a button.

Initially, you’ll need to cast your fishing line for the elusive Speartuna fish. I must warn you, from my personal encounters, these creatures often disregard your lure. To make things smoother, it’s beneficial to complete the fishing sidequests given by Kanya at the Scarlet Forest base camp. The fourth quest, titled “The Catch of a Lifetime!”, will reward you with two fishing baits that entice large fish. In this case, the Duster Rig bait won’t be useful, but the Speartuna are drawn to the Tuff Joint Bait.

After securing Tuff Joint Bait onto your lure, throw it out and hope for the best. Occasionally, moving your lure slowly along the left joystick up and down can catch the Speartuna’s interest, but you may have to cast several times before it works.

After Speartuna takes a bite, push RT to set the hook and start the Whopper fishing mini-game. Here, you should aim not to overload your fishing line with tension, or else it will snap and you’ll lose your catch. The Whopper will move back and forth while fighting against the line; in response, guide your left analog stick in the direction the fish is swimming to prevent excessive line tension.

Some large catches might jump off the fishing line, and regrettably, the Speartuna tends to do just that. When the Speartuna jumps, guide your left joystick in the direction it’s jumping and then hit ‘RT’ to reel it in.

In this situation, the timing is a bit delicate, but you’ll realize you’ve done well if your hunter manages to keep their balance. On the other hand, if your hunter loses balance and your controller vibrates, it means you didn’t quite get it right, and you’ve increased the line’s tension.

After some effort, the Speartuna will exhaust itself, creating an opportunity for you to pull it out. Once it stops swimming, quickly press up and down on the left joystick to reel it in as quickly as possible. You’ll probably need to do several rounds of this mini-game to fully reel in each Speartuna, so be prepared for multiple attempts.

Whopper fishing often requires a good deal of experimentation and learning from mistakes, so don’t be surprised if you encounter some snapped lines along the way. As I mentioned earlier, any vibration from the controller while attempting to catch a whopper is an indication of trouble. However, if you manage to stop the vibration, it means you’re doing something correctly.

As I grind through levels, hoping for that dash of good fortune, I’m confident that I’ll soon add my first Speartuna to my collection, complete with its coveted Speartuna Fin. That brings me one step closer to wielding the wildest fish-blade – only five more to go! Kudos to you!
