Pokémon Pokopia is a friendly place with lots of opportunities to meet new people. It’s designed as a fun mix of the relaxing life-simulation of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the creative building of Minecraft.
Finding all the Pokémon in the game isn’t simple. Some need special habitats built to attract them, while others are cleverly hidden. For example, you’ll have to explore caves to find and rescue Pokémon like Onix.
Here’s a guide to rescuing Onix from the cave in Pokémon Pokopia, allowing you to add a new Pokémon to your team!
Where to Find Onix

Unlike many other Pokémon in Pokémon Pokopia, Onix isn’t found just wandering around. You’ll have to actively look for it, and it’s usually located near the Pokémon Center.
After leaving the Pokémon Center, turn left and head back to the area where you battled Scyther. From there, you have two different paths you can take to find Onix.
Start by using Rock Smash on the ground diagonally from the tree where you fought Scyther. This will create a small opening, allowing you to see into the cave.
Next, break the blocks blocking the path close to where you found the cave. This will open up a route to the beach, and you’ll find another entrance to the cave where Onix is hiding.
Explore the cave until you find a speech bubble showing someone needs help. Follow the bubble – it will lead you to Onix, who’s stuck behind some incredibly tough rocks that you can’t break.
Onix will explain that it’s trapped in rocks and ask for your help escaping. You won’t be able to simply break the rocks, so you’ll have to find another solution.
Finding a Slowpoke
Once you’ve talked to Onix, go back to Professor Tangrowth. He’ll ask you to head to the beach where you began your adventure. You’ll discover some old ruins there, left behind by the people who used to live in this place.
After you finish the request for Tangrowth, it will assist with the Onix problem by organizing a meeting with all the Pokémon you’ve befriended to brainstorm solutions.
The team will determine you need a Slowpoke. Slowpoke has the ability to make it rain, which will soften the rocks and allow you to break them.
You can attract a Slowpoke by building a suitable habitat near the ocean. Simply place four or more tall grass blocks right next to the water, and eventually, a Slowpoke will spawn there.
After locating Slowpoke, you’ll need to create a staircase so it can reach Professor Tangrowth. Make sure each block in the staircase is a different height to allow Slowpoke to climb up easily.
Raising the Humidity
To trigger rain with Slowpoke, it needs to yawn powerfully enough to make it start pouring. You can achieve this by increasing the humidity of the area around it.

There are a few ways to help increase the humidity in the air:
- Water the ground
- Plant seeds and have a Pokémon like Bulbasaur help them grow
- Create ponds
- Add decor like fountains
- Creating a Rain Dance Site
The Pokémon you’ve already caught, like Bulbasaur and Squirtle, can also help make the air more humid when you ask them. Once it’s humid enough, you can use Slowpoke’s Yawn to make it start raining.
The rain will pass soon, but don’t worry – Kyogre will show up in the ocean. Chat with Kyogre, and it will make it rain again.
Freeing Onix
Okay, so it started raining, and I headed back to where I found Onix earlier. He said all this rain has made the ground really soft, like it’s finally ready to be broken apart. Sounds like progress!
You can now use Rock Smash to break the clay bricks that are keeping Onix trapped in the cave. Once you’ve broken enough bricks, Onix will be able to escape by itself, and you can go back to Professor Tangrowth to continue your adventure.
