Borderlands 4 is a wild ride, whether you’re playing by yourself or with others. But a frustrating ‘Incompatible Version’ error can unexpectedly stop you in your tracks.
Kairos offers a really unique experience, letting you collect awesome weapons, play as strong characters like Harlowe, Amon, Vex, and Rafa, and challenge tough world bosses and weekly events. It’s even better when you play with friends!
Many players are running into an issue that prevents them from playing Borderlands 4 with friends. They’re seeing an ‘Incompatible Version’ error, which stops them from joining co-op games. Here’s a breakdown of what causes this problem and how to try and fix it.
Why are you getting ‘Incompatible Version’ in Borderlands 4
The recent update released on September 15th is causing the ‘Incompatible Version’ error in Borderlands 4.
Ever since the update, a lot of us have been running into problems when trying to play co-op. The biggest issue is this message popping up: “The session you are trying to join is running an incompatible version of the game. Please try upgrading your game version.” It’s super frustrating because it basically means we can’t play with our friends unless we all have the exact same version!
This often happens in co-op games when the game doesn’t detect the latest update, making it think one or more players are using an older version.
How to fix
Install the update
Since the ‘Incompatible Version’ error happens because of outdated software, the first thing you should try is installing the latest update.
Make sure you and your friends are all playing the latest version of the game. If anyone’s behind on updates, have them install the newest one. And if *you* were the one who needed to update, maybe don’t mention it – just update and pretend to be pleasantly surprised when everything starts working again. We’ll keep your secret!
Reboot Borderlands 4
If the problem continues, try completely closing your game. On a PC, use the Task Manager to ensure Borderlands 4 isn’t still running in the background.
If you’re playing on a console, completely close the game – make sure it’s not still running in the background – and then start it up again. This should hopefully fix the problem.
Wait for the patch
Many players are currently experiencing this new problem, so the developers are probably aware of it and working on a fix that will be included in an upcoming update.
If you’d prefer not to reinstall the game and don’t mind waiting, this is likely the best approach. Wait a few days – you can still play by yourself in the meantime – and the next update should probably fix the problem.
That covers everything you need to know about the “Borderlands 4 incompatible version” error. While you’re playfully teasing your friend for not updating, don’t forget to check who has the strongest character or look for free rewards using SHiFT codes – and you can redeem those codes without even starting the game!
