How To Find, Tame, And Ride Minecraft Happy Ghasts

At Minecraft Live 2025, Mojang unveiled the addition of the Friendly Ghast to their survival game. Although Ghasts are typically hostile creatures in Minecraft, the Friendly Ghast is peaceful and can eventually be mounted. However, there are a few procedures to follow before you can own a Friendly Ghast. They must first be rehydrated and matured into their adult form. Friendly Ghasts don’t appear naturally in the survival game; instead, you’ll need to venture into the Nether to initiate the process. Here is a guide on how to capture, domesticate, and ride Friendly Ghasts in Minecraft:

1. Head to the Nether: The first step is to travel to the Nether, which can be done by activating a Nether portal or using a Nether Star to create your own portal.

2. Locate a Baby Ghast: In the Nether, search for a Baby Ghast. They are smaller than adult Ghasts and appear as white floating orbs with red eyes.

3. Rehydrate the Baby Ghast: To rehydrate the Baby Ghast, you’ll need to use a bucket of water on it. Once rehydrated, the Baby Ghast will grow into its adult form over time.

4. Tame the Adult Ghast: To tame an Adult Ghast, you must feed it a Golden Carrot. After being fed, the Ghast will become peaceful and can be ridden.

5. Ride the Happy Ghast: To ride the Happy Ghast, simply approach it and press the jump key while facing the Ghast. You’ll automatically mount it when close enough. Enjoy your new passive companion in Minecraft!

How to find a Dried Ghast

In Minecraft, you won’t stumble upon cheerful Ghasts naturally in the game world. Instead, you’ll need to create a Nether Portal and journey through it to locate them. The entity you’re looking for is called a Dried Ghast – a stationary, withered version of the Ghast. You can find these in the Soul Sand Valleys biome of the Nether near Nether fossils, or you might come across one while exploring. If you happen upon a Dried Ghast near some fossils, you can mine it instantly using any tool or even by hand. Interestingly, there’s about a 2% chance that Piglins will trade a Dried Ghast when given a Gold Ingot.

Dried Ghast crafting recipe

It’s more convenient to find a Dried Ghast in the Nether instead of creating one from scratch due to the resources involved. However, if you choose to make it yourself, place one Soul Sand at the grid’s center and encircle it with Ghast Tears. You can acquire Ghast Tears by vanquishing the hostile Ghast entity, a mob that resides in the Nether. To manufacture the Dried Ghast, you will require:

1. One piece of Soul Sand
2. A surrounding of Ghast Tears

  • 1x Soul Sand
  • 8x Ghast Tears

How to make a Ghastling

Once you’ve got a Dried Ghast, to start the rehydration procedure, immerse it in water. You’ll recognize if it’s working because it will release green sparkles and its expression will change, becoming more cheerful and lighter in shade. The whole process takes roughly 20 minutes. In five minutes, it will be partially hydrated; after ten minutes, it will be mostly hydrated; and by fifteen minutes, it will be fully hydrated. At the 20-minute mark, your Dried Ghast will transform into a Ghastling.

If water is removed during the hydration stage, the item will gradually transform into a Dried Ghast, at an equal pace to the hydration process. On the other hand, if it gets damaged or harvested during this stage, you’ll find a Dried Ghast in your inventory, and the process needs to be restarted.

Once you’ve revived your Dried Ghast and obtained a Ghastling, it will start wandering and trail players or other entities within a 16-block radius. It tends to stick closer to you, but if there are certain non-baby mobs nearby, it’s content to follow them as well. Unlike regular Ghasts, Ghastlings can’t drown in water. Over a period of 20 minutes, your Ghastling will grow into an Adult (or Happy) Ghast. If you prefer to hasten this growth, simply feed your Ghastling 10 snowballs to make it fully-grown.

How to tame and ride a Happy Ghast

Since the Happy Ghast is raised from infancy by you, it becomes domesticated by the time it grows up. It forms a strong bond with the house where it grew, and during its rehydration, it will attach itself to the player who is nearest at that moment.

After being fitted with a harness, the charmingly named Happy Ghast becomes quite endearing to look at. Do give it a glance! Not only does it serve as an appealing mode of transportation, but up to four players can hop aboard one Happy Ghast simultaneously, making it an efficient means of traversing maps swiftly. Although multiple riders are allowed, only the first one to climb on will be able to steer the direction in which the Happy Ghast flies. Flying high provides a great vantage point for construction, as the Happy Ghast remains stationary if someone is standing on it.

When you want to move items or creatures with the Helpful Specter, keep in mind that once there are no players nearby, any additional objects will be thrown off. To transport creatures more effectively, secure a rope (leash) around it and link the other end to the Helpful Specter, creating an improvised parachute-like structure for a smoother ride.

Releasing or fastening a harness, also known as un-mounting, will change the location where the Cheerful Specter is tethered. With the harness on, the Cheerful Specter will wander within a 32-block vicinity of its home base. When not bound, the Cheerful Specter can roam up to 64 blocks away. If the Cheerful Specter passes away, it will abandon its harness. Unlike their aggressive counterparts, Cheerful Specters are susceptible to fire damage and cannot launch fireballs.

Happy Ghast harness crafting recipe

To ride the Happy Ghast, you will need to craft a harness. The harness is crafted from:

  • 1x leather
  • 2x glass
  • 1x colored wool

Feel free to select any shade of yarn that suits you best, just keep in mind that it may alter the harness color. So, consider a hue you’re comfortable with looking at for an extended period. To detach the harness without causing harm to the Happy Ghast, simply use scissors on it.
