Back in July 2018, they tossed some vibrant Coral into my Minecraft world, spicing up the underwater scenery of my survival game. However, if you’re not careful with how you gather and utilize this colorful addition, it can soon lose its charm, turning the once lively oceans dull, drab, and monotonous.
Five distinct types of coral exist: tube, fire, horn, bubble, and brain corals, along with fan-shaped variations of each. These natural formations thrive in the tropical waters of coral reefs within warm ocean biomes. However, to remain alive, they require a constant water supply. Without it, they transform into lifeless coral, losing their vibrant hues of blue, orange, pink, and yellow, becoming dull and gray instead.
How to collect Coral in Minecraft
To gather coral in Minecraft, it’s essential to have a tool with the Silk Touch enchantment. This feature allows you to mine the coral instantly, which is a significant advantage over resources like Obsidian that require more time to harvest. Given that it’s located underwater, this efficiency is particularly useful to avoid any potential drowning mishaps.
Every now and then, the roaming merchant I frequently encounter presents me with Coral Blocks in exchange for three Emeralds. After gathering these beautiful corals, I found they are useless when it comes to crafting items in the game. Their sole purpose? To grace my world with their striking beauty!
How to use Coral in Minecraft
Once you’ve carefully retrieved your coral from the depths of the ocean, there are several options for its placement: lakes, rivers, and aquariums within your base make great spots for decoration or as a vibrant habitat for your fish. But what if you want to utilize it outside of water? That’s something to consider separately.
Coral can be placed where it has access to water on at least one side, not necessarily submerged in the water itself. In other words, while it may sound unusual, coral could theoretically serve as a building material if an efficient water supply system, whether hidden or visible, is in place to keep it consistently wet.
To adorn your space using corals, simply submerge a sand block by pouring water over it until it’s waterlogged. Then, gently place the coral fans on the surface of the water-filled block. This method ensures that the corals remain alive within the game environment, and can be applied to any block that supports waterlogging.
