In everyday life, mushrooms are common and ordinary. However, in the world of Minecraft, they’re anything but standard. Sprinkle some bonemeal on them, and they could expand to immense, awe-inspiring heights. If you pay close attention to certain Minecraft creatures, such as the ominous red cows, you may notice mushrooms growing on their backs. Mushrooms can be found in numerous locations, and there are countless ways to utilize them. In this tutorial, we’ll share all the essential information, including whether or not you can cultivate them similarly to many other Minecraft crops.

How to get mushrooms in Minecraft
In various spots across the Minecraft world, you’ll encounter several types of mushrooms. You can gather them using whatever tool you have handy. A large mushroom block, when mined, may yield up to two identical mushrooms of the same color. Importantly, equipping your tools with the Minecraft enchantment Fortune will not influence the number of mushrooms that drop.
If the support beneath a mushroom is displaced, removed, or transformed; if water or another fluid touches it; or if the neighboring block undergoes a change of state, the mushroom will crumble immediately and fall without alteration.
Mushrooms tend to pop up in dimly lit locations. Each instance may have a 12.5% probability for red mushrooms or a 25% chance for brown ones. Unlike many game plants, mushrooms can appear on various types of blocks. They grow on surfaces across swamp, mushroom fields, old growth taiga regions, and even in the Nether.
As a fan, I’ve discovered something fascinating! If you ever come across a witch’s hideout, there might just be a mushroom nestled in a flower pot hidden within its depths. Now, when it comes to Java and Bedrock, they share many common traits, but here’s an intriguing difference: In the Bedrock edition, you can find mushrooms growing on fallen oak, birch, spruce, or jungle trees – something that’s not found in Java!
In case you stumble upon the uncommon Mushroom Fields biomes, employing shears on a Mooshroom cow will result in collecting five identical-colored mushrooms. However, the Mooshroom cow will then turn back into an ordinary one.
Finally, mushrooms can be bought from the Wandering Trader and cost one emerald.

Mushrooms can be cultivated on various types of blocks, except for slabs and stairs. Both brown and red mushrooms share the same growth pace. Applying bonemeal to a planted mushroom can cause it to expand into a large mushroom of the same color, provided it’s positioned on grass, dirt, or moss in dim conditions. For it to grow into a massive mushroom, you will need to clear an area of 7x7x8 blocks around it.
Following its planting, a mushroom can potentially grow in an adjacent square if there are less than five mushrooms in the immediate vicinity.
Although nearly unnoticeable, brown mushrooms emit a faint glow under the right conditions. However, this luminescence does not occur when they are placed in a flowerpot.
Mushrooms are versatile ingredients that can be used to make various dishes. One of the most practical recipes is Mushroom Stew, which calls for a bowl, red mushrooms, and brown mushrooms. This meal is great at filling you up when you’re hungry. On the other hand, combining cooked rabbit, carrots, baked potatoes, and any type of mushroom with a bowl will result in a delicious Rabbit Stew. If you mix red and brown mushrooms with a bowl and any kind of flower, you get Suspicious Stew, whose flavor depends on the flower used and can have different effects when consumed. Lastly, a Fermented Spider Eye is prepared by combining a brown mushroom, sugar, and a spider eye, which is useful for brewing potions.
