How to cure vampirism in Oblivion or become a vampire on purpose for the nighttime buffs

In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Cyrodiil poses significant risks, with diseases being as potentially harmful as encounters with bandits or Daedra. Most illnesses merely weaken your abilities or inflict minor penalties, but the Porphyric Hemophilia stands out as a serious condition that can drastically alter your gameplay experience. It transforms you into a vampire, which could metaphorically speaking, ruin your entire day.

If you fail to find a remedy for Porphyric Hemophilia promptly, you might unwittingly find yourself chasing the cure for vampirism instead. While being a vampire in Oblivion may initially seem intriguing and even have some appealing aspects, it’s a predicament you wouldn’t want to land in unintentionally, as it can be more of a trap than a dream come true.

How to cure vampirism

If you wish to be free from the curse of vampirism, there’s a journey with a transformative quest waiting for you. Once you undergo this vampire cure, it’s permanent and you won’t regain your vampire nature afterwards.

Vampire cure quest

In the game Oblivion, if you want to get rid of vampirism, you should journey to the Arcane University located in the Imperial City. There, speak with Raminus Polus and take on his “Vampire Cure” mission. After transforming into a vampire, an option called “Cure Vampirism” will show up when conversing with healers or other suitable NPCs. They’ll all guide you to Raminus Polus, initiating the quest.

It seems Polus isn’t well-informed, so he asks you to visit Janus Hassildor in Skingrad instead. His wife has fallen ill (to vampirism, surprisingly), and if you’re willing to aid him, Hassildor offers a Cure Vampirism potion as a reward for your assistance.

To acquire the necessary potion, you must make a trip to see Melisande in Drakelowe. However, before she can start brewing, she requires five empty Grand Soul Gems. Regular filled gems won’t do, so you’ll need to track down the scarce empties for her.

Finding empty grand soul gems

In the Imperial City Market District, you’ll find Grand Soul Gems for purchase at the Mystic Emporium. Mages Guild locations across major settlements also sell Soul Gems. If you visit the Mages Guild hall in Chorrol, you’ll discover a stockpile of them securely kept in display cases. You are welcome to take as many as you require, provided you can unlock them. Having a Skeleton Key on hand makes this process smoother if you happen to have one.

Furthermore, once you take on Melisande’s mission, three vacant Grand Soul Gems appear in nearby caves. You can discover them in the Crayfish Cave located south of Cheydinhal, the Nornal ruins situated southwest of Cheydinhal, and the Squandered Mine to the south of Cheydinhal. If you’d prefer not to delve into dungeons, an alternative option is to utilize the Oblivion console command “player.additem 000382DF 5” which will add five empty gems directly to your inventory.

The vampire cure potion

Once you hand over the Soul Gems to Melisande, she tasks you with collecting an extensive array of additional items for the concoction.

  • Bloodgrass
  • Garlic
  • Nightshade
  • Blood of an Argonian
  • Ashes of a Powerful Vampire

Finding Bloodgrass, Garlic, and Nightshade is relatively straightforward, but procuring Argonian blood and the ashes of a potent vampire is, naturally, more challenging.

You receive an enchanted dagger from Melisande, which you can use to gather Argonian blood. However, before you can do so, you need to find a willing donor first. If you haven’t completed the questline related to Argonians yet, Argonian combatants in the third round of the arena could be an option. Additionally, Argonians may appear in random bandit groups. The Veyond Cave, teeming with hostile Argonian bandits, is another good spot, especially for most players as it’s a short walk north of Bravil.

To find the remains of a formidable vampire, search for the elusive vampire known as Hindaril in the swampy region of Redwater Slough. Upon defeating him, you won’t gather the typical Vampire Ash, but rather Ashes of Hindaril instead.

After handing over all items to Melisande, wait exactly 24 hours and the necessary potions will be prepared. One of these potions will be a regular “Cure Vampirism” potion intended for your own use, while another one, labeled as “Hassildor’s Wife Vampirism Cure Potion”, should be returned to Hassildor upon completion of the quest. This act will earn you a reward.

How to become a vampire in Oblivion

In an imaginary world called Oblivion, there exists a condition known as Porphyric Hemophilia. If left untreated, this disease can lead to a person transforming into a vampire. It’s important to note that being bitten by a vampire increases the risk of contracting this condition and setting the stage for your transformation over time.

Vampires are typically discovered in secluded caves, distanced from the public eye. However, there might be instances where you could encounter vampires as you explore Oblivion during its initial opening hours, especially after leaving the Imperial Prison Sewer. The onset of the disease is gradual, so it may take some time for symptoms to manifest, and you might not realize until several hours later that you’ve been transformed and require a cure for vampirism.

To turn into a vampire within the game Oblivion, simply locate an existing vampire and allow them to attack you several times. Any physical assault from a vampire may cause the Porphyric Hemophilia disease, making it relatively simple to initiate your transformation if that’s the route you wish to take. After three in-game days, once you sleep, the Porphyric Hemophilia will transform you into a vampire.

Darkness Eternal

In addition, some tasks in Oblivion grant you the transformation into a vampire. For instance, finishing all the assignments given by Vicente Valtieri from the Dark Brotherhood will trigger a subsequent minor mission titled “Everlasting Darkness,” where Valtieri transforms you into a vampire upon completion of this quest.

After wrapping up his last mission with the Dark Brotherhood titled “The Assassinated Man”, engage him in a chat and choose the discussion topic as “Dark Gift”. Subsequently, find a bed to rest in so Valtieri can perform his ritual, thereby transmitting Porphyric Hemophilia to you.

Mehrunes’ Razor

In the additional content (DLC) of Oblivion’s Year Edition, titled “The Mehrunes’ Razor,” there is an uncomplicated route to transform into a vampire. At the culmination of the quest named “Unveiling Mehrunes’ Razor,” eat the Beating Heart from Msirae Faythung. This act will cause you to contract both Porphyric Hemophilia and Cannibal’s Disease.

After three in-game days have passed during which you transform into a vampire, you can get rid of your cannibalistic urges while keeping your vampiric form by casting the Cure Disease spell, or using specific potions and foods. However, it’s important to note that you should not attempt to cure yourself before turning into a vampire, as Porphyric Hemophilia can be treated like other diseases in the game.

Vampirism benefits and drawbacks

Transforming into a vampire significantly alters the dynamics, as there are multiple advantages and disadvantages associated with being a vampire within the world of Oblivion.

Feeding and drinking blood

When you transform into a vampire, a new feature titled “Vampiric State” will appear in your journal, which represents your condition’s intensity. This level grows over time, but it can be decreased by feeding on non-player characters (NPCs) and consuming their blood. Regardless of how frequently you feed, the Vampiric State cannot fall below 25.

In the game world, every 24 hours without feeding increases your vampirism level by 25. As your vampirism level rises, both positive and negative effects associated with being a vampire intensify. While you may not be immediately attacked in Cyrodiil like in some other Elder Scrolls games, you’ll still need to cope with the other drawbacks that come with being a vampire in your daily life.

Vampirism debuffs

As a fang-bearing, night-loving creature in Oblivion, the scorching rays of the sun pose a significant threat to my wellbeing. When my vampirism level surpasses 50, stepping foot outside during daylight hours steadily depletes my health points. Even a single missed feeding session can leave me vulnerable to this sun damage. The intensity of the damage amplifies as the sun’s radiance intensifies, reaching its peak around midday. Moreover, fast travel and idle waiting are rendered impossible when I’m exposed to sunlight. To make matters worse, all vampires in this world share a crippling weakness towards fire, which becomes more pronounced as our condition worsens, escalating from 25 to a fearsome 100.

As time passes since your character last fed, noticeable alterations occur in their appearance. They start exhibiting signs of aging such as wrinkles and graying hair, their eyes might develop a bloodshot or sunken look, and their complexion becomes pale and unhealthy. In some cases, other characters within the game may shun your character if their vampirism has advanced significantly.

To keep your vampirism under control, it’s important to feed frequently. Feeding will bring your vampirism level back down to 25. However, maintaining a high vampire score comes with its own set of challenges. But for those who can manage these difficulties, there are several advantages or buffs that come with a higher vampire status.

Vampirism buffs

Over time, as your vampire state advances from level 25 to 100, you’ll notice enhancements in attributes, acquisition of new powers, and other benefits. These are the characteristics and talents that will strengthen as you refrain from feeding.

  • Attributes
    • Strength
    • Willpower
    • Speed
  • Skills
    • Acrobatics
    • Athletics
    • Destruction
    • Hand to Hand
    • Illusion
    • Mysticism
    • Sneak

Every day you abstain from feeding, you’ll see an increase of 5 points in each attribute and skill. This boost maxes out at 20 points after four straight days without consuming any blood. Additionally, your resistance to ordinary weapons will rise by 5% each day, reaching a maximum of 20%.

Vampires possess an inherent resistance to illness and paralysis, and this resilience strengthens over time, granting them additional capabilities.

As a vampire enthusiast, always keep in mind that feasting on Non-Player Characters (NPCs) will bring your vampiric level back to the starting point of 25 and strip away most of your vampire perks. Maintaining the delicate balance of being a bloodsucker involves smartly rationing your intake of blood.
