As an old-time spacefarer who’s seen more than my fair share of galactic drama, I’d say if you’re all about that action and don’t mind ruffling a few feathers, go ahead and grab those two Vortex Interlocks. The legendary Titanium Va’ruun Penumbra alone is worth the headache of dealing with Karija again, not to mention the extra credits and XP you’ll rack up. But be warned, my friend, that farmers’ lives are at stake here. If you’re not ready to bear the weight of such a choice on your conscience, might as well leave the second Interlock where it is and save those seaweed farmers some heartache. Either way, remember: space travel ain’t for the faint-hearted, and always keep a good sense of humor about you, or else you’ll end up taking yourself too seriously out here in the cosmos! May your journey through Starfield be as exciting as it is profitable, traveler!
One key lesson from Starfield’s “Exhuming the Past” quest is that exploring a deserted dam can prove to be more challenging than expected.
In this adventure, a part of Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion pack, you aid one out of three Houses on Dazra in settling their disputes. House Ka’ric concentrates on freeing hostage relatives, whereas House Veth’aal opts for their elimination. Contrastingly, House Dul’kehf assigns you a mission to Ma’leen Dam for the retrieval of the Vortex Interlock.
Initially, this appears to be an ordinary errand task; however, it transforms into a test due to the labyrinthine structure of the place and a difficult choice that lies ahead.
How to get the keycard and access the Dam
To obtain the ID card for the individual standing beside the secure access door at Ma’leen Dam, locate a child named Comrak Abbass in the vicinity of the stairs.
In another part of town, you’ll find Kaviil Fahrzanas, who currently possesses the card you need. You can either appeal to his goodwill or employ your Security skill to retrieve the card from him. Once acquired, take the card back to the door and use it to open the way ahead.
How to explore the Dam
In order to accomplish the goal of investigating the Ma’leen Dam within Starfield Shattered Space, it is essential that you navigate your way to the Pump Station and release the water from the dam, thus enabling access to the lower sections.
First, make your way down the stairs and follow the blue marker to your right. Along the way, you’ll come across a hallway with a gaping hole in the floor. Jump down safely, then utilize your jetpack to traverse from one red pipe to another suspended above. Above these pipes, you’ll discover a door.
Keep going by the signpost until you spot a computer enclosed within a glass window. To reach it, locate the stairway on the ground level, but be sure to steer clear of the tainted water. Then, ascend the stairs and operate the lever to unlock the door.
Inside, you’ll locate the computer that manages the Sub Pump, but it won’t function since the Vortex Power Modulator isn’t responding. Instead, follow the blue marker and look skyward to identify the blue half-spherical device (the Vortex Power Modulator). Once spotted, destroy it by firing at it, then make your way back to the computer.
Currently, make your way through the empty chambers of the dam. In due course, you’ll stumble upon a white door that is locked and has the task “Find a method to open this door.“. To unlock it, you must carry out an experiment on teleportation first, requiring you to enter a three-digit code into a nearby computer nearby.
How to complete the teleportation experiment
Engaging with the computer situated beyond the locked white door will unveil its role in the Starfield’s teleportation study.
As a fan excitedly uncovering secrets, I found the code for the keycard tucked away in the “Recent Experimental Results” document. The magic number is 335, a code that mysteriously transported a keycard, just what I’ve been searching for!
With the keycard in hand, unlock the white door and proceed to retrieve the Vortex Interlock.
How to retrieve a Vortex Interlock
Following another encounter with Karija, approach the central computer in the room. Subsequently, walk down the hall on your right until you find a scarlet Emergency Cuttable Wall marked with orange corners. Fire at these orange sections to dismantle the wall and move through the vents.
Further along, you’ll meet Karija again. Subsequently, aim for the Vortex Power Modulator located at the rear of the room. Lastly, head back to the computer to get your initial Vortex Interlock.
Should you remove the remaining Interlock or exit the Dam?
Removing the remaining Interlock
If you’re someone who values immediate benefits over ethical considerations, then this path could be right up your alley.
Rewards:
- 2 Vortex Interlocks
- 1 Exterminator Modified Va’ruun Penumbra
- 1 Titanium Va’ruun Penumbra
- 12000 Credits
- 350 XP
- Andreja’s Disapproval
Man, I gotta admit, taking down Karija might seem like a no-brainer, but they’ve got a valid concern. If I go ahead and knock out that second Vortex Interlock, it’s gonna hit those farmers hard, especially the kid and the dude I convinced to let me near Ma’leen Dam. You see, without the interlock, their seaweed farm gets wrecked, and you can check it out for yourself by completing the side mission, “Checking in with the Villagers.” It’s a tough call, but the well-being of these folks is on the line here.
In Starfield: Shattered Space, grabbing the Vortex Interlock is essential for the last mission. It’ll make things smoother down the line. Not only that, but you’ll find the legendary heavy weapon, Titanium Va’ruun Penumbra, on Karija’s remains. To top it off, Ekris will gift you an Exterminator Modified Va’ruun Penumbra and a hefty 12000 Credits!
If you opt for this route, locate the door in the room that’s locked, unlock it by using the control panel on the left side. Once unlocked, aim at the power modulator and destroy it by firing. Afterward, manipulate the levers to release and acquire the second Vortex Interlock stealthily.
Exiting the Dam
If you’re unwilling to compromise the livelihoods of less fortunate farmers just for personal gain, then choosing “Exhuming the Past” in Starfield seems most suitable for you.
Rewards:
- 1 Vortex Interlock
- 1 Exterminator Modified Va’ruun Penumbra
- 12000 Credits
- 350 XP
- Andreja’s Approval
With just one Vortex Interlock in your pocket, you make your way back up where you came from and exit the Dam. It’s a long way up, and the vortex enemies just won’t stop pestering you. The farm remains safe, but you can only hand over one Vortex Interlock to Ekris and the Citadel.
As a fellow adventurer, I find myself at the conclusion of our primary mission, but with our return to the bustling city of Dazra, it seems like an opportune moment to take on a side quest, such as “The Duel”. By completing this task, you’ll also gain access to The Keep Armory. Let’s not let this chance slip away!
