In the adventure of Pirate Yakuza set in Hawaii, both Majima and the Goro Pirates encounter numerous challenging adversaries. The Giant Squid, however, proves to be particularly hard to conquer among them all.
As I found myself on the brink of the climactic chapter in “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii“, it was Majima and his seafaring crew who were hot on the trail of the fabled treasure. However, before we could set foot upon its location, a formidable Giant Squid stood in our path.
In this game, an adversary offers some of the most thrilling naval skirmishes, and we’ve broken down strategies for defeating the marine beast below.
How to defeat the Giant Squid
The Giant Squid may not boast the most extensive repertoire of moves, but it does possess multiple stages. In the initial phase, it will attempt to batter your vessel with its tentacles and sporadically launch explosive missiles into the water.
Navigate towards the monster’s position, wait for the signal to attack, then unleash your weaponry to gradually deplete its vitality.
To avoid being attacked, utilize your extra power and scramble out of the way first. After its tentacles have retreated into the water, you’ll then be able to target the Squid’s eyes. You can either continue firing with your ship’s weapons or switch to an aerial perspective so that Majima can employ a Rocket Launcher instead.
During this part, I discovered that using a dual-tentacle Energy Blaster was extremely effective. This weapon is designed to harm both tentacles at once.
After The Squid has been knocked back a few times, it will repeatedly submerge underwater and reappear on the opposite side of the ocean. Make sure to keep an eye on your minimap when this happens so you can swiftly find its new position. The tentacle’s health will recover, but you can simply repeatedly use the same method.

In the end, the underwater creature will immerse itself fully and extend its tentacles to harm you. Since their attack points are easy to identify, simply move swiftly away from danger and then fire your cannons at them.
After you’ve encountered its tentacles several times, the Giant Squid will reemerge, repeating its initial behavior, but this time it will unleash an extra attack – a broad cloud of ink. The strategy to evade this remains the same: keep an eye on the area it seems likely to cover with ink and synchronize your boost with the right timing.
Whenever I manage to dodge those colossal blows coming from the sea beast, deal a steady stream of damage in return, and remember to occasionally repair my ship when needed, I can confidently say that victory is within reach!
Having the right equipment and Pirates assigned is key to this fight, however.
Preparing for the fight
Before engaging in this battle, ensure that you’ve updated the Goromaru first. It would be advantageous to have strong armaments, strategically place your pirate team in optimal roles, and strengthen your defenses prior to the encounter.
As you approach the end of Chapter 4, you’ll encounter a message that signifies a critical decision point. It’s advisable to save your game at this juncture, and then take a moment to prepare or upgrade your ship (or quickly earn some money for those upgrades.)
Equipment and Crew Formation
Here’s a breakdown of some ideal weapons and where they should be placed on the Goromaru:
- Port: 4-star Energy Cannon (1,400 Cannon Power)
- Starboard: 3-star Silver Cannon (300 Cannon Power)
- Machine Guns: 3-star Frost Machine Guns (300 Cannon Power)
- Rocket Launcher: Captain’s Rocket Launcher
The 4-star energy cannon was the strongest weapon across all tools, yet enhanced cannons and Frost Machine Guns, rather than their basic counterparts, significantly boosted the damage output.
In relation to your Crew, try to achieve at least a B-grade rating for each weapon, based on the pirates you deploy. For instance, my Starboard cannons earned an overall A-grade rating because I positioned four crew members who all had an A ranking in Canon Power. This enhanced their performance in combat.
In summary, your First Mate plays a crucial role due to their distinct First Mate Ability. Prior to our recent encounter, I assigned Nishida to the team, boosting his ability to perform additional repair actions by 2. This resulted in a total of 7 repair actions at my disposal during the battle.
Upgrading performance
Preparation for the finale involves enhancing performance, which can be achieved through the Goromaru “Set Sail” menu. Here, the performance-boosting upgrades you might want to focus on unlocking are highlighted.
- Additional Port Cannon
- Additional Starboard Cannon
- Additional Repairs
- Fuel Tank Increase
- Durability Boost
1 Enhanced cannons allow for simultaneous firing of multiple cannonballs, increasing their total damage output.
2 Improved repairs and durability enhance your ship’s resilience.
3 Boost duration expansion from the Fuel Tank upgrade is crucial in dodging attacks by Giant Squids.
Following the plans and arrangements we’ve outlined, you should have a good chance at overcoming the mighty Giant Squid, bringing you one step nearer to the mythical treasure!
