Among the most beloved couples on “The Office” was a pair destined to resemble Jim and Pam, but the show‘s portrayal of their relationship turned sour, making it less likely that this would happen. From the very first season of “The Office,” Jim and Pam were the main romantic focus. For the initial three seasons, they formed an iconic will-they-or-won’t-they couple, similar to Ross and Rachel from “Friends” or Sam and Diane from “Cheers.” In the fourth season, they finally became a couple and lived contentedly thereafter. As a result, the writers needed to introduce new romantic conflicts since their story had reached a happy ending.
In the world of “The Office,” Angela found herself in not just one, but two romantic tangles with her colleagues. Ryan and Kelly’s love story, marked by its on-and-off nature, often provided a dose of humor. Michael and Holly had a strong connection, but their blossoming romance was abruptly halted due to a job transfer. The series came the closest to replicating Jim and Pam with Andy and Erin’s relationship, yet in the final seasons, their relationship became so tainted that it mirrored more closely Pam and Roy’s complex dynamics.
Andy And Erin Could Have Been The Office’s New Jim & Pam
They Had Great Chemistry And Seemed Perfect For Each Other
Initially, Andy and Erin appeared to be the epitome of a harmonious couple. Their connection was strong, leading them to fall for each other swiftly. However, as time progressed, Erin found herself in a relationship with Gabe due to what she perceived as necessity. Andy coldly dismissed Erin’s efforts at reconciliation without any apparent justification, then he betrayed his long-term girlfriend to win Erin back. Eventually, he left Erin to embark on a boating trip with his brother. Their romance started out reminiscent of Jim and Pam’s bliss but deteriorated into a toxic mess comparable to Michael and Jan’s tumultuous relationship.
The Office Ruined Its Best New Couple By Changing Andy
Andy Became A Much Worse Person After Getting Michael’s Job
Following Steve Carell’s departure from “The Office”, Michael Scott’s role was vacant, attracting numerous potential replacements, including internal applicants and celebrity guests. In the end, Andy was selected for the position. It was strategic for the network to appoint Ed Helms instead of Steve Carell, given the popularity of “The Hangover” series which had elevated him as the second most recognized cast member. However, from a narrative standpoint, it seemed illogical for Andy to take over as the new manager.
After taking over as the new manager, Andy started displaying qualities that made people dislike him more. The writers decided to revert his character development, and as a result, they resurfaced all of his most undesirable traits. These traits turned him into a horrendous boyfriend for Erin because he was selfish, neglectful, and unhelpful. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when he vanished on a boat trip for several months to cater to Helms’ demanding film schedule.
Andy And Erin’s Relationship Is One Of The Office’s Most Frustrating Storylines
It Starts Off So Great And Goes Drastically Downhill
Over the span of nine seasons on “The Office”, some storylines proved challenging to endure during repeat viewings. One such instance was Cathy’s failed attempt to break apart Jim and Pam’s marriage by tempting Jim with an affair, which felt anything but amusing; it was simply uncomfortable. Brian the sound engineer’s presence added a layer of self-referentiality that sometimes felt excessive. However, Andy and Erin’s relationship might be considered just as frustrating, if not more so, because it initially held so much potential.
From the very start, Cathy’s meddling in others’ homes was unsettling; Brian’s television appearances left audiences puzzled as soon as he set down the microphone. However, Andy and Erin initially appeared to have a promising relationship when they started dating. They were compassionate, mutually encouraging, and shared a similar sense of humor. Transforming them into the most toxic couple on the show was one of the biggest blunders in The Office, a series that had its fair share of mishaps in later seasons.
