How the ‘Agatha All Along’ Practical Sets Captured the ‘Golden Age of Fantasy and Horror’

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for practical filmmaking and a soft spot for nostalgia, I must say that “Agatha All Along” has truly enchanted me. This series is not just another Marvel production, it’s a love letter to the golden age of fantasy and horror, beautifully crafted through practical sets and immersive environments.

Caution: Plot Spoilers Ahead! As a passionate cinephile, let me share some intriguing insights about the captivating tale unfolding in “Agatha All Along,” now available for streaming on Disney+. This enchanting story has taken an unexpected turn that I simply can’t keep to myself!

In the latest Marvel TV series titled “Agatha All Along,” Kathryn Hahn once again takes on the character of Agatha Harkness, a role she previously played in the popular sitcom spoof “WandaVision” produced by the studio in 2021. Unlike previous portrayals of this character and other aspects of the show, “Agatha All Along” presents a noticeable departure from typical superhero universe tropes. This series stands out due to its unique visual style and tone, as it’s crafted using real-life set pieces rather than computer-generated imagery, offering a distinctly different world altogether.

According to showrunner Jac Schaeffer, the series we’re working on follows a quest-like storyline reminiscent of “The Wizard of Oz.” It blends elements of fantasy and horror, drawing inspiration from content popular in the 1940s… We aimed to give it a similar aesthetic and evoke the same nostalgic feeling that ‘WandaVision’ did.

Schaeffer acknowledges Executive Producer Mary Livanos for suggesting they film the series with a focus on practical filmmaking techniques. He considers this decision beneficial from a creative perspective.

In ‘Agatha All Along’, I’m thrilled to pay tribute to the artistry of cinematography, harkening back to the golden era of fantasy and horror films.

As a movie enthusiast, I found it fascinating when the creative minds behind “Agatha All Along” chose The Witches Road. The spiritual resonance with the timeless Yellow Brick Road from “The Wizard of Oz” inspired them to take on the challenge of crafting their own enchanting pathway.

Upon entering the set, it felt incredibly enchanting, much like walking through a misty landscape dotted with glimmering mushrooms. There was an abundance of intricate details and magical elements hidden in every nook and cranny,” Livanos explains. “It’s truly amazing to be able to experience and then portray the environment on camera in a way that makes the show’s atmosphere crystal clear to all viewers.

Livanos explains that every scene along The Witches Road was filmed using real cameras, with the opening shot of the winding path being captured using a painted backdrop. To make things look even more authentic, they built a genuine mud pit on set, added mushrooms and used live fireflies during a scene in Episode 3. This way, every moment in the series felt as realistic as possible.

Schaeffer mentioned that one difficulty in building The Witches Road was having to change locations, as the chosen area turned out to be too narrow for the intended road. To accommodate certain scenes, the actors were required to walk along the road at different speeds, thus either covering more or less ground.

Schaeffer explains, “Surrounding our exceptional team with an enchanting environment, like a bewitching forest, sent shivers down everyone’s spine.” He continues, “This unique setup fosters an infectious excitement and dedication that I believe can’t be replicated artificially.

In “Agatha All Along,” Livanos explains that the hands-on production techniques used were energizing for the entire cast and crew. She goes on to explain how CGI was initially proposed to achieve Agatha’s swift transformation in the series premiere, but performing the scene practically made the enchanting filming process seem effortless.

In Episode 7, titled “Death’s Hand in Mine,” another instance of realistic filmmaking unfolds. This episode, with ties to the song “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” from the series, showcases a castle setting adorned with swords suspended from the ceiling for authenticity. According to Schaeffer, these blades were not just props but were indeed sharp and constructed from real metal. Each sword was skillfully arranged using piano wire, and the path each would take was meticulously planned out beforehand.

Schaeffer explained that it was crucial for us to follow the story sequentially and keep tabs on every sword clash. The camera needed to pass through at the precise instant, in the perfect location where a sword might drop into the foreground, capturing the shot. This required meticulous planning and a lot of effort.

According to Schaeffer’s explanation, the purpose and functionality of sets serve as the fundamental storylines for the characters in the entire series.

Schaeffer explains, “The manner in which the swords fall resembles Lilia’s (Patti LuPone) ordeal of being torn through time.” He continues, “Each time a sword falls, it startles the viewer as if they’ve received an electric shock. This repeated jolt is similar to what happens to Lilia; she becomes emotionally frayed due to being jarred again and again.

Livanos points out that a hands-on method was applied in filmmaking across the series, offering ample flexibility during post-production. This meant that each and every frame was captured, which in turn provided the team with an array of editing options.

A big thank you goes out to our phenomenal cast who braved the journey with us,” Livanos expresses. “They walked barefoot on the road, navigated steep slides, got covered in mud and dirt, and even crawled through tough terrain. We spent months together because we adopted a realistic, hands-on approach.

Take a peek at an exclusive behind-the-scenes moment as Schaeffer and the “Agatha All Along” cast lay their eyes on The Witches Road set for the very first time.
