SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for Thursday’s episode of “9-1-1” on ABC.
Tonight’s episode of “9-1-1” picked up where it left off two weeks ago, delving into a poignant, tear-jerking installment that centered around the funeral of Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause). In the last broadcast, Krause’s character, Bobby, tragically passed away following a sudden illness and making the selfless decision to use the only available antidote to save his teammate Chimney (Kenneth Choi) instead. As he bid a final farewell to his wife, LAPD Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett), and his close associate Buck (Oliver Stark), Bobby knelt down for a prayer before taking his last breath.
As I tuned into “9-1-1” on May 1 for an episode entitled “The Last Alarm,” I was captivated by an unexpected scene: it was a flashback, showing Bobby and the Station 118 crew responding to an emergency call from eight years ago – right at the start of the series. In this fire, they were fighting to save a family, but tragically, they could not find the infant son, Mika, in time. The despair on Bobby’s face as he looked at the devastated mother while the house continued to burn was palpable.
Currently, Athena is visiting a cemetery and discussing funeral arrangements with her children for Bobby. However, they’re finding it difficult to determine where he would prefer to be buried. Additionally, the authorities have not released Bobby’s body to her as of now, preventing her from burying him at this time.
Later, Athena grows angry with Chimney upon discovering he’s been repeatedly contacting the department, insisting they hand over Bobby’s remains. It appears Athena fears that once Bobby is buried, everyone may find it easier to move past his death – something she’s determined to prevent. However, the body is now being released and the funeral will take place on the coming Tuesday.
Upon hastily exiting the fire station following my heated exchange with Chimney, I bump into a man in search of Bobby. After informing him that Bobby has tragically passed and I’m his widow, he expresses his condolences and shares his intention to meet Bobby since he believed Bobby could aid his sister. It transpires that this sister is Leah, the mother who lost her son Mika in a fire eight years ago. However, Leah refuses to accept Mika’s death, as she’s recently encountered a young boy named Cameron at a birthday party whom she believes bears a striking resemblance to Mika.
Leah now strongly believes that Cameron is actually Mika, who was taken from his home during the fire by his current mother – a woman Leah claims attended the same prenatal yoga class as her. Leah made an attempt to kidnap Cameron and is now in prison. Athena visits her there, showing some skepticism but also willingness to listen. Athena mentions she’s not sure about Leah’s sanity, but if Mika is still alive, she promises to reunite him with Leah.
At night, Athena works on solving the mystery at their unfinished home, which she shares with Bobby, and deliberately avoids calls from everyone. It’s then that a spectral figure resembling Bobby emerges, asking her if she plans to launch a podcast about the strange occurrences hinting at kidnapping she’s been jotting down on her wall.
Bobby wonders if you should be preoccupied with arranging his funeral, given the grand plans he’s heard about. However, Athena clarifies that the LAFD already has a standard procedure for a ‘hero’s burial’ and doesn’t require her input. When Ghost Bobby challenges her, she becomes defensive: “You chose to isolate yourself in a lab, leading to your death. You don’t get to dictate how I spend my time.” To this, he simply replies, “That hurts,” and she emphasizes that she needs to re-examine the case because it was significant to Bobby, and now he can’t be involved.
In a surprising turn of events, Athena obtained Leah’s consent to excavate Mika’s grave, but found it empty instead. Leah’s brother later confided that the infant’s remains had been consumed by a fire and they hadn’t shared this with Leah. Subsequently, Athena visited Cameron’s household, persuading them for DNA testing against Leah. The results revealed that Cameron was not Mika. Upon breaking this news to Leah, Athena said, “For a fleeting instant, you dared to hope that miracles existed.
Subsequently, there’s a flashback to eight years back, as Bobby visits Leah in the hospital post-fire. He shares with her his past tragedy of losing his two children and first wife in a fire. When she wonders how he manages daily life, Bobby explains, “I find strength in the hope that I will reunite with them someday.
Currently, it’s Bobby’s funeral day, and all from Firehouse 118 are present. This includes Eddie (Ryan Guzman), who made a trip back especially for this event, as well as Chimney, whom Buck had to convince to attend because Chimney is still harboring anger towards Bobby for his selfless act.
Following the funeral, Bobby’s group transfers his coffin into a fire truck for a grand procession through the streets of Los Angeles, culminating in a tribute bell ring from the captain. Instead of laying him to rest in an L.A. cemetery, Athena and her children opted to fly with Bobby’s coffin back to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was buried alongside his first wife, Marcy, and their children, Robert Jr. and Brooke.
Find comfort, you’ve arrived at your resting place now, my dear,” Athena whispers as she presses a tender kiss on his coffin right before the episode concludes.
