As a seasoned cinephile who has weathered countless tales of Hollywood’s enigmatic actors, I find myself somewhat perplexed by Joaquin Phoenix‘s latest escapade. Time and again, he leaves projects on the precipice, sending shockwaves through the industry. The latest saga revolves around M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” a film that found itself in dire need of a leading man following an eleventh-hour exit by none other than Mr. Phoenix himself.
It seems that Joaquin Phoenix has gained attention once more due to rumors of him abandoning a film at the last moment. On Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, James McAvoy shared the story behind Phoenix replacing him as the lead in M. Night Shyamalan’s movie Split. We have long known that Phoenix left the production suddenly; The Guardian reported in 2017 that Phoenix had walked away “at the 11th hour.” However, what does this actually mean? As McAvoy told Horowitz, Phoenix supposedly bailed out about two weeks prior to filming. “It was extremely last minute,” said McAvoy. “I had just two weeks.” (Interestingly, it could have been worse – reports say that Phoenix quit a Todd Haynes gay romance movie only five days before filming was due to start this year.)
In a unique narrative, Phoenix portrays a character living with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Given the extensive preparation time allotted, McAvoy admitted to feeling apprehensive prior to the initial table read. He explained, “I’m sitting there thinking, Oh my goodness, I have to play these 15 characters and be judged by everyone in the room, including Universal studio executives, Jason Blum, and more … and I haven’t even discovered some of the characters yet,” he reminisced. “It all came at me very rapidly.” Despite the pressure, McAvoy appears to remain upbeat about the experience. Reflecting on the situation, he offered a surprising perspective: “Sometimes arriving late is the best approach.” Essentially, McAvoy might have been offering words of encouragement!
