29 years ago, I played Doug Kinney in the movie “Multiplicity.” It was an intriguing concept – cloning myself to manage both work and home life more efficiently. Now, looking back, I’m thrilled to share that this film seems to have had a subtle but significant impact on my later role in the series.
In an interview, Ben Stiller (who is both the director and executive producer of the sci-fi thriller series) mentioned that viewers are really intrigued about how they manage to prevent the inner and outer aspects of the show’s characters from becoming entangled. Although he didn’t provide a definitive answer, Scott shared that he sketched out two distinct timelines for Innie Mark and Outie Mark on a poster board as a visual aid. This idea came to him after recalling a scene in the movie “Multiplicity,” where Michael Keaton did something similar.
In addition to his scripts, Scott had two separate collections, each containing unique remarks for his internal (innie) and external (outie) performances. As he explained, during Season 2, it was a large mix-up of everything. “Everyone manages their materials in their own way,” Stiller commented. Furthermore, the actor shared that S provided character histories and biographies for the cast and crew to help immerse themselves in the show. “We’ve all become so entwined with this production,” Stiller added. “It’s not just on the screen; it’s within us as well.
The show “Severance,” which debuted in 2022, wrapped up its second season on March 21, 2025, and in the finale titled “Cold Harbor,” the viewers were left amazed by an unexpected ending where inner Mark opted for Helly R. (Britt Lower) over his outie’s wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman). This sparked much debate among fans as to whether it was actually Helly R., or if it was her outie, Helena Eagen.
In a previous conversation, I mentioned Helly R. in the final installment. However, I believe that in Episode 9, Dylan [Zach Cherry] subtly casts some uncertainty about her self-perception. She’s grappling with the loss of Irving (), and then she’s dealing with the apparent estrangement from her brother figure because Dylan appears to have distanced himself from her in that episode.
Lower Explains Helly;s Motivation To See Mark
According to Lower, when Mark offered him a chance to coexist in some way during Episode 10, and Helly had just encountered her peculiar father who remarked, “I see Kier in you,” it stirred a feeling of uncertainty within her about whether she still has a family left. In a subsequent conversation with another interviewer, Lower mentioned that Helly’s intuition led her to follow Mark towards the doors at the end of the final episode.
Lower clarified that she simply moved forward without hesitation, and it seemed as if the scene was designed to give Mark the option. She appeared, but allowed him to decide.
Severance Season 1 and Season 2 are streaming on Apple TV+.
