How Karate Kid Legends connects Mr Miyagi to Mr Han

Karate Kid Legends skillfully bridges the gap between the original Karate Kid film and the 2010 Jackie Chan production, offering a captivating exploration of history.

1984 saw the introduction of Pat Morita’s character, Mr. Miyagi, in The Karate Kid. Hailing from the Japanese island of Okinawa, he was both a shrewd guide and martial arts master.

2010’s remake of The Karate Kid featured a narrative quite alike, but instead of the original setting, it took place in Beijing. Additionally, the character of a sagely guide was introduced, this time embodied by the character of Mr. Han, portrayed by Jackie Chan.

Initially, Netflix’s popular show Cobra Kai seemed to be setting up for a crossover with the Karate Kid storyline. However, it turned out not to happen. Yet, in the new movie titled The Karate Kid Legends, an opening scene effectively carries forward that connection, though only subtly hinting at spoilers.

Karate Kid Part II scene helps fuse legends of Miyagi and Han

The epic journey of The Karate Kid begins unexpectedly, opening with a scene from The Karate Kid Part II. The words “Okinawa, Japan, 1986” flash across the screen, marking the start of Daniel’s visit to the island. He steps into Miyagi’s dojo, where his teacher is honing his skills.

Daniel queries about certain images adorning the walls, and Mr. Miyagi shares tales of his forefathers, such as the fisherman who overindulged in sake, dozed off, and awoke in China.

Subsequently, through a voice-over, it seems as if Pat Morita is being reenacted, revealing that the Han family adopted Miyagi and instilled in him kung fu, thereby creating “two cultures, two martial arts, and two branches” of the same familial tree.

In the story of The Karate Kid, he went back to Okinawa carrying that wisdom, which eventually led to the origin of Miyagi karate. This connection between the two masters paved the way for the blending of karate and kung fu as depicted in Karate Kid Legends.
