How Hamsters and Squids Inspired ‘Spellbound’s’ Adorably Mischievous Sidekick Flink

As a movie buff with a soft spot for animated films and a knack for identifying the hidden gems, I must say that “Spellbound” has certainly caught my attention. The character development, particularly of Flink, is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s fascinating to learn about the inspiration behind this adorable creature, drawing from hamsters, raccoons, squirrels, weasels, and even aquatic animals like cuttlefish! I must admit, I found that rather hilarious – who would have thought a film would take inspiration from such diverse sources?

What’s in a name? For “Spellbound” director Vicky Jenson, it’s a simple portmanteau.

In an early sketch of Flink, Princess Ellian’s adorably mischievous animal sidekick, Jenson wanted him to flash and blink as he energetically flitted about. “I have a tendency to squish words together,” she tells EbMaster. “So I was like, ‘He just has to flink!’”

When designing the character for “rascal” Flink, art director Guillermo Ramirez took cues from hamsters, raccoons, squirrels, weasels, and even an aquatic creature – cuttlefish or squids. He found inspiration in their movements rather than their looks, as he humorously mentions, “They were not particularly cute!

Fortunately, Flink is quite endearing. This little, rodent-like purple creature has a knack for stashing an assortment of items – anything from acorns to magical gadgets – within his surprisingly spacious pouches, which was inspired by one of Ramirez’s early sketches. As he put it, “I drew Flink with a mouthful of things, and it turned out quite amusing. We were able to incorporate that humor into the film!

Jenson anticipates that Flink’s habit of hiding his cheeks might resonate with parents of boisterous canines. “Anyone who owns a puppy is familiar with the situation: ‘What have you got? What is it? Give it to me! Drop it!’

During the movie’s early events, an enchanting blunder leads Flink and the regal court advisor, Minister Bolinar (played by John Lithgow), to experience a spontaneous body swap. This scene is not only endearing but also beneficial for the storyline. Jenson shares that this concept emerged around mid-production. It was a brilliant idea suggested by one of Skydance’s other directors. By having Flink interact with someone instead of just being with mute monsters, Ellian gains a companion. Plus, it’s quite amusing to picture small Flink in Bolinar’s body!

“Spellbound” is now streaming on Netflix.
