How Frontline Finished a Rough Cut of Election Doc ‘The Choice’ — Then Started All Over Again With Kamala Harris

As a movie critic with over three decades of experience delving into the lives and careers of political figures, I must say that “The Choice 2024: Harris vs. Trump” is an enlightening and captivating documentary. The way Michael Kirk and his team have woven together investigative biographies of both candidates is nothing short of masterful.

If you’re still on the fence about your vote this election year, tune in to PBS’ Frontline for “The Choice 2024: Harris vs. Trump,” airing Tuesday evening. This two-hour documentary series offers an in-depth look at both candidates’ lives and perspectives, using a blend of investigative research and interviews.

This is the most recent episode of “The Choice,” a special program that airs during election seasons on Frontline, which has been presenting it since 1988. The current edition was helmed by Michael Kirk (“America After 9/11”), who has been documenting Washington for Frontline for over three decades and is responsible for the last six episodes of “The Choice.

Kirk explains that the focus of this series is on uncovering the unique approaches to life each candidate employs, assessing their progress over time, and making comparisons between them.

For ‘The Choice 2024,’ Kirk conducted numerous conversations with friends, advisors, critics, authors, journalists, and political insiders of both Harris and Trump. This documentary delves into the life stories of these candidates, tracing back their narratives from their early years. The film provides a comprehensive yet concise account of each candidate’s journey to the nomination.

For undecided American voters, the doc and its interwoven investigative biographies of both major-party candidates could be game-changing. But Frontline executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath says that the goal is to reach both undecided and decided voters with “nuanced, fact-based reporting on each candidate.”

According to Aronson-Rath, it doesn’t matter who you’ve decided to vote for; it’s essential to understand the candidate’s beliefs, background, and values. This way, you can make an informed decision when casting your ballot.

During the first week of July, Kirk and Aronson-Rath played a four-hour version of “The Election of 2024,” which starred Donald Trump and President Joe Biden.

The goal was to reduce it to three hours, and on July 21, Harris declared her candidacy for president in 2024, as the director explains. At that time, there wasn’t any official documentary or comprehensive biography about Harris. Our archivist commented, ‘I’m not finding much at the networks, etc. I don’t know how you plan to create an hour-long program from her life in seven weeks. However, we managed to do it.

To follow Harris’ path from her days in Berkeley during the ’60s, up to her tenure as a prosecutor, her political ascension in California, and ultimately her role as the first Black, South Asian, and female vice president in Washington D.C., “The Choice 2024” team consulted Harris’ childhood companions, college peers, advisors from California and the White House, as well as journalists who have chronicled her professional life.

In the movie, Lateefah Simon, a former employee of Harris during her tenure as San Francisco’s District Attorney, notes that “Kamala Harris commands respect. If it isn’t offered, she makes sure to claim it.

This documentary traces Donald Trump’s journey from real estate in New York to entertainment and ultimately politics. It includes interviews from his 2016 campaign period up until now with individuals such as his niece, business partners, TV colleagues, authors who have written about him, and advisors who worked with him during his time in the White House.

According to biographer Marc Fisher, this presents an opportunity for Donald Trump to leave with a victory under his belt, as stated in the documentary.

The main theme of “The Choice” in 2020 revolved around the concept of crisis, whereas the focus for the 2024 version seems to be on the subject of combatants or fighters.

At the start of the documentary, narrator Will Lyman explains: “In a country split apart, two contrasting contenders square off. A vice president who soared rapidly, breaking down barriers as they went, and a former president with years of public attention, constantly striving to be victorious at any expense. Two combatants. One aiming for vindication, promising a restoration to greatness. The other seeking to leave the past behind, offering a vision of a prosperous future.

Halfway through the initial edit, Aronson-Rath realized that Harris and Trump were both combative figures,” he stated. “They’re engaged in battles with vastly different ideologies and policies, but their approach to life shares striking similarities. For Trump, his struggle revolves around a nostalgic vision of America and defending it. On the other hand, for Kamala Harris, her fight is about the present and future.
