How Does Peacemaker Season 2 Fit Into The DCU Timeline? James Gunn Provides The Answer

A minor spoiler for Superman lies ahead.

The second season of “Peacemaker” is approaching, and it’s set to introduce several significant modifications. Given the recent developments with DC Studios, the series starring John Cena will now align with the DCU continuity. This means that the character Christopher Smith will coexist in the same universe as those from shows like “Creature Commandos” and “Superman”. Some might still be curious about where this new season fits within the official chronology. James Gunn, the writer-director, has offered some clarification on this point.

Over the weekend, San Diego Comic-Con 2025 took place, and the team behind Season 2 of “Peacemaker” gathered in Hall H for a panel. TopMob was present at this event where James Gunn and his crew shared tidbits about what fans can anticipate from the upcoming episodes of the superhero series. During the discussion, Gunn touched upon the season’s position within the DCU timeline, providing details on its connection to “Superman.” You can watch our Instagram video for more information on Gunn’s insights regarding this topic.

It appears that the latest season of the DCU show unfolds just a month after the events depicted in Superman. I find this concept appealing as it keeps the storyline close to the interdimensional turmoil featured in the movie. Given the timing, I assume that within the universe, Kal-El’s battle with Lex Luthor would still be a vivid memory for those who were deeply involved, including Hawkgirl and Green Lantern, who will make their appearance in Season 2.

Indeed, John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, didn’t take part in the battle between The Last Son of Krypton. However, Smith did make a brief appearance in the film and, during a comical segment, he scolded Superman on a talk show after it was disclosed that his parents intended for him to rule over humans upon his arrival on Earth.

More on Peacemaker

James Gunn expresses a desire for a confrontation between Peacemaker, John Cena’s DC character, and Batman. However, I find it challenging to move past the nickname he’s given this era of DC superheroes.

James Gunn wants to see a battle between Peacemaker, played by John Cena in the DC Universe, and Batman, but I can’t seem to get beyond the nickname he has for this period featuring these superheroes.

It appears that James Gunn, who is also a co-leader at DC Studios, has gained valuable insights from his previous work with Marvel. While he’s shared his thoughts on post-credit scenes (which will be featured in the episodes of Peacemaker Season 2), I ponder about how meticulous he’ll be regarding continuity. As a person who values consistency, I hope Gunn considers the timeline as future projects unfold. However, I also hope he strikes a suitable balance between maintaining order and not being overly constrained by past events.

In the upcoming Season 2 of Peacemaker, I’ll find myself navigating through various timelines. As hinted in the recent trailer, my character, Christopher Smith, will be transported to an alternate world where a more successful version of me resides. My father’s interdimensional portal will be the means by which I traverse these dimensions. However, I won’t just be jumping worlds without a fight; Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, is hot on my tail, seeking vengeance for the demise of his son.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation as I reflect on the upcoming season of Chris’s series. It appears that he’ll be stepping into the limelight, potentially even exploring new cosmic realms. Regarding the DC Universe, I must say it’s refreshing to finally have some understanding of where these events fit within this ever-expanding narrative continuity.

Starting August 21, 2025, the second season of DC’s Peacemaker will debut on television schedules, and viewers will require a Max subscription to watch it online. Until then, current subscribers can enjoy all eight episodes from Season 1.
