The first season of House of the Dragon featured some incredibly compelling characters, particularly King Viserys, a kind ruler struggling to maintain peace amidst family drama. Unfortunately, Viserys’ time on the show was cut short by his death at the end of the first season, which quickly led to a fierce conflict between two opposing factions, the Greens and the Blacks.

Even though Viserys died earlier in the series, his story remains a deeply moving and important part of House of the Dragon. Even three years after his death, the consequences of his passing are deeply felt, as his predictions about the coming conflict prove frighteningly correct. He foresaw the Targaryen struggle for the throne and tried to prevent it, and looking back, his pursuit of peace wasn’t a sign of weakness, but a wise and life-saving choice for the realm.

Re-watching the first season finale of House of the Dragon really highlights how crucial Viserys was to keeping the peace in the Seven Kingdoms, making his death especially sad. Viserys Targaryen’s passing is one of the most relatable moments in the show, demonstrating that even a powerful Targaryen with dragon blood couldn’t beat a long illness. He declined slowly, and as his health worsened, the kingdom also fell into decline. Though flawed, Viserys was more valuable alive than dead. His death immediately threw the Red Keep into chaos, with Aegon quickly crowned king and Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne ignored.

Season 2 built up to a major war, one that likely wouldn’t have happened if Viserys had still been alive. Despite the chaos, he was fortunate enough to die of old age and illness, getting to see his family flourish – a rare fate for most characters in House of the Dragon.
