Horizon Dev Explains Why Guerrilla "Needed" To Leave Killzone Behind

As a gamer who has been around since the dawn of the PlayStation era, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when I hear about the potential hiatus of the Killzone series. Killzone: Shadow Fall was one of those games that truly defined my early years with the PS4, and the thought of not seeing another installment anytime soon is disheartening.

It has been more than ten years since a fresh installment of the Killzone series was released, and it appears we might not see another one from the FPS franchise for some time, as suggested by a seasoned developer from Guerrilla Games. Art Director Roy Postma mentioned that after the release of Killzone: Shadow Fall in 2013, the team felt compelled to make changes or “shake things up.

In conversation with The Washington Post, Postma shared the reason Guerrilla transitioned from Killzone to Horizon Zero Dawn: “We felt it was time for our team to move on. As a studio, we desired a change of scenery,” Postma stated. “Horizon Zero Dawn represented a stark contrast to Killzone.

The decision made has paved the way for Lego Horizon Adventures, set to launch on November 14 for PC, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. As expressed by Posta, who has been with Guerrilla for 24 years, the themes embodied in this story and its characters – such as forming a chosen family of companions and discovering your role within the world – resonate with people of all ages.

Furthermore, it was recently mentioned that Guerrilla’s upcoming project is Horizon Online rather than another installment in the single-player series of their Killzone franchise. It seems this new game will come first, possibly after a long wait. This suggests that Guerrilla may not be focusing on the Killzone series for some time.

Among the significant PlayStation series that haven’t received updates for quite some time are Killzone, and there are those who believe that Resistance, another shooter franchise, could also benefit from a revival on the PS5.
