The Western film series starring Kevin Costner, titled “Horizon“, continues to face obstacles, and the outlook past the 2024 release of the first installment appears grim. Despite anticipation for part two of the four-part franchise, one of its actors has shared a “discouraging” update on its progress and the state of the remaining films in the series.
At the red carpet event for Tyler Perry’s Straw, Glynn Turman, who stars in Horizon, shared that since Chapter 1 was released last June, he hasn’t received any updates about the series. Yet, he remains optimistic that Chapter 2 will be out soon. He further mentioned, “They started filming Part 3, but I’m unsure if they continued it.” He also expressed his eagerness to watch Chapter 2 as soon as possible.
Despite mixed reviews (51% on Rotten Tomatoes) or its commercial success ($37.5 million worldwide against a $50 million budget), Turman commended Costner’s creative vision. “It’s somewhat disappointing for those of us involved, but I adore Part 1… It harks back to traditional filmmaking and storytelling, and Kevin is exceptional at that,” he remarked. “Hats off to him. What a daring decision he made.
Horizon: An American Saga Faces Production and Legal Issues
As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of “Horizon,” a long-nurtured passion project for Kevin Costner. Interestingly, this project was initially conceived as a standalone film back in 1988, but later evolved into a four-part series. However, it seems that what could have been an Oscar-worthy addition to the Western genre might face a setback, with the potential of falling short even before reaching its midpoint.
An American Saga – Chapter 1,” a film detailing the western expansion during the Civil War, caused a chain reaction. By August 2024, with no rescheduled date announced, despite its premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February 2025, production on “Chapter 3” temporarily halted due to financial issues. As for “Chapter 4,” it’s still in the early stages of development. Turman’s remarks mirror those of his co-star, who also doubts the future of “Horizon.
Alongside delays in production, Costner and Horizon are dealing with several lawsuits. Costner’s financing company, Horizon Series, is involved in legal disputes over claimed breaches of their shared financing agreement. Furthermore, a controversial sexual assault scene, allegedly improvised without the performer being warned about it in advance and without an intimacy coordinator present, has also sparked controversy.
For Horizon, there’s a glimmer of hope: the continued popularity of the project is evident through on-demand content and fan interest. The first episode features Kevin Costner sharing screen time with Michael Rooker, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, and Jena Malone.
Viewers can stream Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 via Max.
